Alfa Romeo's - good or bad idea?

I know of 3 twin spark engines "kicking a leg out of bed", stick with the V6 or the Diesel

You could say that about any car though, i'm sure there are plently of Skoda owners who've had engines self destruct!

Honda would be generaly regarded as one of the most reliable car manufacturers in the world, if not the most reliable manufacturer, but i've seen plenty of VTEC engines go pop!!

My mate (everybody has one !) had a GTV , the one with the big engine, and he spent literally thousands on it but loved it to bits.

It used to frighten me though!

He only sold it when his house started to fall apart faster than his car, and he still says he wished he had never sold it 20 years later !

As they say, 'Once Bitten'

That would be the GTV6 2.5 then, awesome car for its day - even today you will NOT find a better sounding car anywhere.

It's funny really, in these days of euro box's and all different manufacturers making cars out of the same bits (VW, Seat, Audi, Skoda for example) that even though Alfa are part of the Fiat group, the cars still look significantly different and much better than anything else on the roads as they always have done. It's a shame other manufacturers dont take a leaf out of Alfas book and then our Skoda's wouldn't look so boring!!

Tis true about Alfa ownership though, You ALWAYS regret selling an Alfa, And always wish you still had it!! About the only cars left that really have any soul now!

Our team leader at works wife had a 156 although not sure what model, needed a new engine after the cambelt snapped at 40k miles. It took the alfa dealer about 2 months to fix the car, and bits of the engine were stored on the back seat.

I had one as a rental car 2 years ago in spain, IIRC a 1.9 JTD. Nice engine, very economical but the car had so many quirks it was a pain.

1) Rear view mirrors were designed for design rather than function, making overtaking a pain on motorway.

2) Horrific turning circle made parking difficult.

3) the climate control was very fiddly and needed to be reset everytime the car was started.

This was a nearly new car with about 9000 kms on the clock.
