Advice on best engine to have?

Featured Replies

So Im normally over on the Fabia 1 section, but we are adding a Yeti to the collection.

We are looking at about 7k to spend cash. A 2012 Urban yeti popped up near us but I was a little put off by the 108 bhp 2ltr tdi ( like the 140bhp) and also the 5 speed gearbox.  It also has 80k on the clock which I know is nothing.  The rear doors have been painted ( stone chips).  Apart from that it seems a good car.

Can anyone shed light on if we should hold out for a 6 speed 140bhp? The pro's and cons of the 108bhp 5 speed etc.

Or should we be looking at a tsi engine?

Any advice on buying a Yeti is welcome to us, like what to look out for etc .

Think this is my first post / thread that does not include the words " Power!!"  My sensible hat is on :D

Will the journeys done in the Yeti be the same as the Fabia ? i.e. reasonably long journeys if so then the MPG is important  so Diesel is probably the way to go.

Have you test driven either of the Diesel engines in the Yeti to feel the difference to drive ?( either will be slow compared to your remapped vRS ;) )

General advice is drive it, as you may hate / love it, and then a sensible decision can be made.

I have been driving this power Yeti for 7 years.

Its the most economical engine and will cruise all day at the speed limit and I have never had to change down on a motorway hill to maintain 70. You may think twice before overtaking on a normal road though.

It is also about the same as the 1.2 petrol.

Dont go for the 110ps 4x4 though.

I like driving my wife's Fabia though with the same engine, much faster!

Hi lfc

Yes, long highland Journeys are the Norm! See I know the Yeti from working at Skoda but left before learning long term issues popped up etc  and I expect it to be a wee bit slower than my Fabia :D

It's good to know ken ^^^ has ran one for 7 years with no dramas but we over take regular up here on B roads etc so lethargic performance is a problem to an extent.

Still just looking out for issues really that I need to look out for if we go and see it.  Thanks for the replies folks

I've got the 110 2.0 litre diesel and love it but I have commented a couple of times that it is a pity that it only has 5 gears.

Most of the time it is fine but there are occasions, i.e. when driving leisurely or in hilly areas (on holiday) when I find the gaps between ratios too great. I don't  live in a hilly area so it is OK for daily use but if I did I would be frustrated by the ratios.

When I bought I didn't want to spend too much as it was a second car. The 150 diesel would have been my choice with the 6 speed box but I didn't want to spend that much or need/want 4 wheel drive.

The 110 has plenty of power over 1500 rpm due to the torque available but for me only having 5 gears is a negative given the very high top gear which the other gears have to be spread wide to accommodate.

Having toured Scotland in my 211 PS Audi TT 6 speed and on motorbikes if I lived where you do it would definitely be the higher powered engine 140/150/170 with 6 speed box!

Thats all good to know,  its what I expected to be honest.  Apart from performance issues at times with a 110 nobody has mentioned any yeti specific issues so thats promising.

I dont think we will view this one tomorrow and hold out for the 6 speed.

So hard to find at the right price up here at around 2012 year.

Will keep posted.

I have had my Yeti now for just over 3 years - No mechanical issues, although within 18 months I did have creaking door seals which after a bit of investigation was resolved under warranty- ( All doors checked alignment and all seals replaced), been good since.

If it helps the car has approx 38K miles on clock and keeping tabs on Fuelley, average is a tad over 28MPG, this is a complete mix of short town journeys, Motorway, A & B roads,  best MPG has been 37 on a long holiday doing many motorway miles.

Yes it all helps.

That fuel figures shocked me a little! Are you running a 1.2 tsi?  I get 69-71 mpg during week in fabia unless I play in which case it drops to about -1 mpg!

Clio returns 40 mpg.

Thank you for the help.

We've got the new Yeti Drive 1.2 DSG. We regularly travel to Inverness and Devon from our home on Tyneside as we have family in both areas. Averaging 46 to 51 mpg on our journeys with a decent load, dependant on traffic.

Of course, if you like to get your foot down, (and we don't)  forget those figures.

As my old instructor used to say. Any fool can drive fast, just press the pedal.   :)

Thats more like it ^^^

That Tdi 140's are just out of reach   especially as its the face lift the one the wife wants.  So its 2012 onwards.  Well I think thats the facelift era?

7k just doesnt quite cut the mustard for a 2012 year car with a 6 cog box.

If anybody has one for sale for around that budget please shout up.

If you look under my picture you will see its a 1.8 L&K ( F/L Version ) Miss Dasiy does not drive it, but it is not revved hard and its shaped like a brick ;):)

My MX5 is 15 years old and that returns me 30 mpg, and that has the nuts revved off it + it's not brick shaped. :)

I am guessing your Fabia is doing reasonably long journeys at a constant speed,My Yeti gets around 35 mpg doing that sort of journey.

However the extra is there for overtaking which has been used and have commented that we would never have attempted same manoeuver in a 1.2.( need at least triple distance).

Aye, it's a 30 mile 5-6 gear run to work.  On the way to work I get 70.01 ish MPG, on the way home I get 58-64 mpg :D  speaks for itself I guess!!

Now thats a nice machine and for sure out of our budget! Always wanted an L&K. I understand your fuel economy, it would probably be higher up by us as it is mostly 6 gear cruising.

I was just talking to my pal across the road at an Mot place, his father bought a new top spec Yeti this year, said father left the dogs in it for a while whilst shopping. They destroyed the dash, airbags , seats, seat belts and all control stalks.  Now that has sobered me right out my friday feeling!.

This weekend we are going to continue looking for our Yeti,  taking in the advice and feedback from you guy's.

I will keep you updated on what we find but in the mean time thank you all for the feedback.

I have a 2012 Yeti with the 2.0tdi 110 bhp engine, and have no problems with our hilly area of North Wales. More that enough power for hills and overtaking, and no problem with the five speed box. It's the 2 wheel drive version which is probably better for this engine, a little less weight and drag. 120,000 miles and so far no problems with the dpf or egr, although I often add dpf cleaner to the diesel to try and keep it that way. I do like to keep the revs up and not let it labour, but still average around 48mpg.

Hard lesson learned - Should have put a dog guard in, & they must be some dogs to shred the leather seats, as th the L&K they are not the soft Alacantra.

Good luck finding what you want, given your miles I personally would go with a 140 Diesel.

He should have had the dogs secured. Ours travels in a comfy secured crate and is not let loose inside the car ever. Lucky the airbags didn't kill them.

The Insurance were going to write that Yeti off you know.  Agree dogs should be restrained or behind GUARD.

You see folks with dogs running all over or even sitting on their laps while driving, quite poor and very dangerous. I do not condone at all.

Just imagine that being your car though, ouch.

Enjoy the weekend folks,  we are shopping for the 140 6 speed this weekend, but thanks for all 110bhp feedback .

Agree. The resultof 15 kilos of dog hitting you from behind in an accident would almost definitely be very nasty indeed.   These idiots who let dogs loose in cars obviously don't have much regard for their own lives or their pets lives.

I think the facelift came out late 2013 or perhaps even 2014.

mine was an early facelift from July 2014 and they seem to command a higher price

I currently have a 170 which certainly isn't lacking in the trouser department and gives mid -low 40s. My 140TDI was delightful- and far more refined and less growly  than the 170 (I expect emissions fix is to blame) ; but the nicest to drive by far I have tried was a 2wd 110TDI. Handled far better than  the heavier 4x4s and ride was spot on as well . Weirdly , considering it's a low powered baby SUV  , the 110 reminded me most of a Mk 2 Golf Gti when punted down a country road - and that I didn't expect

Purely because I believe in updates after folk have taken time to talk.....

Last thursday we went to the shops, and came back with a 2014 Yeti outdoor 4x4 6 speed 2 litre tdi.  30k on the clock and one owner.

The dilemma was it was the 110bhp and in front of the salesman we discussed the feedback on here. As we are remote this was one of the "only" Yeti's we found in our price range.  To be honest the price we thought was a mistake! It was priced the same as 2012's with 80k on the clock.. so after a test drive for the wife and me checking the usual we decided to go for it.

It was solely on the basis of upping power slightly in the next few months with a very very mild Map.

All good and thanks for the help.

Remove pictures from spying dealers :)

With it being 6 speed (and the best colour!) you should find the performance fine. As you say a remap will make it even better.

Glad you're sorted. Report back when you've done a few miles.

Will do, although fuel economy calculator was reset and after a few days now of mixed driving 51 mpg is the Avg reading. We would like higher so hence a wee map.

So I own two hats now.... Sensible hat for the Yeti......... And another kind of hat for Fabia :D

Cheers

Ha, ha, my wife always says I drive the Yeti differently. :)

51 average isn't bad, particularly where you live. Mine isn't that different but mine's only 5 gears. I reckon with 6 the mpg would be mega. Unfortunately we never got the 6 gear 2WD I guess because they wanted us to buy the more expensive 4WD permutations. Same as not getting the 1.4 petrol unless you bought the most expensive L&K.

Sensible for sure  sit back and relax blending in to the road.  Im itching to take it off road though but the boss says no.

Couldnt imagine the yeti with a petrol engine you know.......  But bet its cracking to drive.

Bought oil and filter so I can service it the weekend between the shockingly long long life intervals. Sorted Mudflaps and mats and now want the stainless steel bumper protector.  The list go's on.

But defo defo needs a little more grunt!

The 5 speed 1.6 diesel Greenline was the most economical. I often saw 60+ mpg on the maxidot and over 70 on some leisurely trips.

Dont need 6 gears for economy just the righ ratios
