Boot Auto Close?

Featured Replies

So my wife was having a look at our new Kodiaq today and she opened the boot and while she was having a look it started to auto close (she may have presses the close button).

The worrying this was even after aapplying a Smale pressure to hold it open, it was still closing.

She was able to move away but she is now worried about our young children and the boot auto closing on them...

Anyone know how this feature should work and if we can switch off the automatic close feature?

If your car has the virtual pedal then turn it off in the CAR settings. If not then it's a bit of an anomaly AFAIK as I'm sure virtual pedal is needed for Easy Close.

The cars boot has a safety so it cannot injure you. Problem with this is, if it's very sensitive, a soft item in the boot will stop it from closing so the automatic boot lid on Kodiaq is actualy very unsensitive. You need quite alot of force to stop it from closing, which is a risk to children and older people! (seen a demonstration video on youtube where the boot did stop from closing but was quite painful for the presentor)

"▶ If the lid hits an obstacle when closing, it stops and an audible signal sounds." manual, p. 59

If your car has an electronic boot, i doubt you can disengage it. Closing the electric boot "by hand" repeatedly can damage the electric mechanism. You can only disengage the "foot sensor".

Check your car specs if you have the "virtual pedal".

Personaly, it's an awsome feature. They only way you can close it, is with the button which is on top of the lid and you cannot accidently press it (too high for children to reach when opened), or you manualy pull down on the lid a bit and it will start to close (again too high to reach for children). I think what happened was, your wife moved her foot under the bumper when looking into the boot triggering the "foot sensor". This sensor can be turned off:

"The function can be activated / deactivated in Infotainment in the menu  →
 → Opening and closing.
We recommend that the function is deactivated in the following cases:
▶ Installation of a roof rack.
▶ Connecting a trailer (accessory) to the towbar.
▶ Manual vehicle wash.
▶ Maintenance and repair work in the back of the vehicle.
When connecting a device to the trailer socket the deactivation of the function
takes place."

manual, p. 60

Personally I think electric tailgate are a pointless gimmick and I get frustrated every day while waiting for it to open. I've said before,  that if it were truly a good idea wed all have electrically opening front doors, but it isn't so we don't.

That said, I can confirm that having thoroughly tested the kodiaq tailgate with various body parts haha, it does always stop eventually and I'm pretty sure it could never apply enough pressure for any serious injury.

Thank you for your responses.

I thought the 'kick' boot closure was an extra unless it is now included with the edition spec?

OK, I just stepped outside to research this one.

Can close lid with either tailgate button or fob button. Didn't bother playing with the driver's door button.

On making first contact with person (me), head, shoulder or arm, the tailgate stopped with a "relatively gentle" touch and then bounced back upwards slightly.

Upon the next touch on either tailgate button or fob button, the tailgate opened fully.

I tried it several times and even with the tailgate almost closed, trapping my arm, the tailgate stopped with a fairly light contact. But I'm a grown up.

With 4 small grandchildren, the modus-operandi is important to me too.  My conclusion is that a small child could certainly be hurt by a closing tailgate and I would not want to risk them trapping a limb with the tailgate almost closed. I won't be testing it with a small child :-)

Bugger. I was looking forward to the child testing section of your review. :dull:

I'll think about it :)

Should I try small, medium or large? Or very small?

:)

Depends on who's the cheapest to buy their silence.

Or you could just use the one you like the least :o

Different people have different needs though, for someone who needs to put armfuls of stuff in the boot (or remove armfuls of stuff from the boot, now the virtual pedal can be used to close the tailgate) I imagine it would be very useful for them as they would no longer have to put something down to open/close the tailgate.

If waiting for it to open bothers you that much then try opening it from the remote as you approach the car (or come out of your front door) this way it will be open by the time you get to the car.

My house doesn’t have central locking and I cannot close all the windows by pressing one button on a remote either... doesn’t mean that they are a bad idea on a car though.

I use it in this fashion:

- when aproaching the car with groceries, I click the fob at range so when i actualy get to the car, the boot is fully opened

- when i press for close, i leave the boot to close and walk to the car front door to sit down, before i manage to fully sit myself in the car the boot is closed

I especialy like the sound when closing compared to the slam of the "manual" boot. Didn't order the "virtual pedal" because i think it's more of a fuss than a convenience 90% of time, but that's my personal opinion.

Yeah but the whole point of KESSY is not taking the key out.

Good point on the central locking I would buy this feature on a house. Back in the day on old non-central locking cars I never ever failed to lock all the doors correctly and left windows open, but I do it all the time at home because I can't see them all at once.  There's money to be made here I'm sure...!

Indeed!

I have 2 relatives with different makes of keyless start cars, but not KESSY - you have to faff with a fob to open and lock the doors.

And it drives me crazy when I have to shuffle their cars around at my place. Fob to open/shut and button to start is a very poor halfway house.

One of said persons previously had a BM and that silly vehicle wouldn't even let you move the car at all until the driver's door was closed. Nanny or what?

As stated above, the whole point of the pedal is to open the tailgate when your arms are full and you have no access to the fob. It's ace at that. And I'll confess that the performance of my kick-start pedal (see separate thread) has improved since my much more patient wife determined that the "kick" should be short and sharp, rather than waving a foot under the rear bumper.

Nanny i agree, FIrst time I drove the kodiaq I parked then opened the door to check I was within the lines of the space, determined to go back a bit further and the car wouldn't release the handbrake - it took me far too long to realise it wouldn't release it without all the doors being shut. Kind of annoying.

You can still release the handbrake  manually with the door open, bit of a faff but you soon get used to it.

You don't need to take the key out even for the tailgate. As long as you have the key in your pocket, it will open when you press the button on the boot.

The boot takes about 2 sec to open. Use that time to take a large breath and chill.

  • 4 months later...

Hi Guys - 2 months in love with the Kodiaq, very happy with the bear. One annoying thing I spotted though. The boot making sometimes very annoying failures while closing, it beeps like something would block the way, but nothing. After trying few times after, once it just finishes the closing without me changing anything. It happens totally unexpected which makes it very unreliable of course.

I never pushed it manually to close and usually I open with the virtual pedal and then closing with the button on the boot. A new chapter to the story that yesterday was no reaction on the fob press, which is working fine today...

I have managed to record the failure on this video (sorry for my stupid words... :)) does anyone experienced something similar?

Mine has only failed to close when there was genuinely something obstructing the door.

Usually near the lock mechanism.

Yep. What BoxerBoy says.

No

It probably needs a slight adjustment.
