RLS Retrofitted Autolights

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

I recently completed a personal project of retrofitting RLS to my FL Octavia VRS and it works brilliantly. So recently added a autolight switch and am not sure it is working to the best of its ability. What I mean by this is that it seems confusing as to when it switches the light on / off and the CH/LH lights as well.

Basically I have notices the following after fitting the AutoLight switch

1. The lights came on yesterday right after the car wash and then it remained on for a while even with the Sun light directly shinning on the car. :dull:
The lights came on again after a brief break but this time the sun wasn't shinning but there was still considerable outside light?!?!?
2. The CH/LH only seem to come on when it is pitch dark? not sure if this is normal behavior as I have seen other VAG cars where if there is still outside light the LH would come on.

I have noticed in VCDS 09 Centl Elect > RLS there are few settings to adjust the Light threshold (+20% , +40%). But am not sure how they work? Anybody perhaps could guide me on this please?

Ok guys these are the settings for my RLS

What is everybody's Byte 1 setting?

Also the CH / LH only operates when it is pitch dark?

Byte 1 on my factory fitted RLS is 30 rather than 0A. You could try that?

Ok thanks I have changed that to 30. However I have found a issue with the ADL deactivation.

The sensor seems to work fine according to the measuring block in VCDS i.e. if I cover or uncover the RLS sensor the frequency of the value changes from 7.0 - 0. Initially the light would go on and go off but it seem now that once the light comes on (i.e. by covering the sensor OR under a brief light shade) it wont go back off till 15-20 mins later :dull:

I was fiddling with the 'Light Activation Threshold' and it came on when I set it to +60% but when I set it back to 00 the light would stay on probably for another 15-20 mins??

Am not really sure what the issue is? But seems like it is not sending a signal back to RLS to deactivate the Lights?

A similar issue reported here http://forums.tdiclub.com/showthread.php?t=417192 however looking at the back of the switch the plug has all 10 wires.

I also checked the following and it is set to 0 seconds.

I dont know how it could not work again??

Can you post a adaption map for your BCM, that might highlight some channels that need changing.

The only related difference is that I have the AFL delay set to 0.06s (6).

Other than that, it all looks identical to my factory coded RLS.

Strange I don't really understand the behavior at all? Bought a glass cleaner specially yesterday to make sure I don't have any layer of 'handy' car wash wax on the windscreen. I will need to check it out again today to see if it comes onn and then goes off in time. Might test it further with a torch perhaps?

  • Author

@langers2k that too only noticed it after the car wash :( Hopefully cleaning of the screen will sort out the issue.

The retro fitting of auto lights and wipers comes up on this forum on a regular basis with varying degrees of success and satisfaction to the person installing it. Auto lights and wipers came as standard on my vehicle, but if I had paid for them as an optional extra or had them retro fitted, I would be extremely annoyed and disappointed if my experience of both systems is typical.

I tend to find for the majority of the time I require the use of the lights or wipers it is my intervention that activates them, not as a result of the sensors deeming them necessary.  Today it has been absolutely hoofing it down, and yet neither the lights nor wipers activated until I switched them from auto to manual.  On other occasions it could be one of those rare days in Central Scotland with bright sunshine and it is then the sensors decide to activate both the wipers and lights, which is what you really want, dry wipers blades dragging across a dry screen, or driving behind someone on a sunny day with your headlights on.

The only time I have found the auto lights to be really useful is when driving through the Clyde Tunnel or the various tunnels around southern Spain,  or when setting off for work at Stupid O'clock in the morning.  But even then I have found the sensor switches the lights off when it starts to become lighter far sooner than I would, and I revert to manual mode.  I have raised my disappointment with these systems on several occasions with the dealerships, but as far as they are concerned they are operating within Skoda parameters.

I would also much prefer if the light switch was set out differently; Auto, Off, Manual et al.

I am only posting this as I have read numerous threads where OP's are running around for parts, coding and so on, spending consideral amounts of time and money only to discover the system is not as effective or efficient as they initially thought it would be.

A good post and am sure alot of the this forum would support your point. The last 3 cars I owned had RLS as standard (2 x Leons, 1 BMW) and personally found them quite effective and more or so in the light department. Auto wipers both Yay and Nay as they never satisfied the requirement at the time of action.

However I wanted to retrofit the RLS on the Octy and so far finding the Auto Wiping quite effective believe it or not lol I am happy with the Auto light features but have been finding it quite annoying the strange behaviour of the light coming on right after the car wash and then taking ages for it to go off?!?! But it seems to be behaving fine after I gave the exterior sensor area a good clean wipe using an after market glass cleaner

@langers2k sorry for pestering you. However wanted to report back to you about the auto lights coming on and not going back on.

So as mentioned earlier gave the exterior of the sensor a good wipe clean using a glass cleaner and the sensor has been some what behaving normal.

It went through tunnels and the light came on and went back off. However the timing in it going back off has not been the exact same. Some took around 6 seconds, others took 3 seconds. Is this a normal behaviour???

Also when do your auto lights come on in the evening? Does it come on right before Dusk or a slight drop in light like for e.g. cloudy etc?

finally shinning a torch at the sensor should it not deactivate the auto lights? in the measuring blocks 015 I could see the light frequency going back up to 7.0 but lights didn't go off? is this normal?

It just depends on the lighting conditions, it certainly can take a few seconds after coming out of a tunnel before turning the lights off.

Driving down a country lane with trees can also be enough to trigger the lights too. Once they've come on I tend to move the switch to 'on' until I'm out of the trees to avoid firing up the xenons too often. It's quite noticeable in winter too when the sun is low, it can cause extra activations/deactivations unfortunately. If you drive the same routes you'll soon learn what conditions/areas are likely to confuse it.

Leaving home can also be a little hit and miss, even when using the same space at work and leaving at the same time, sometimes it won't activate :/

Never tried shining a torch or covering the sensor to test it as I've not needed to.

The auto wipers are better, I tend to leave them in the off position and move to auto if it starts to rain. It's typically in one of the least sensitive positions and mostly works well to adjust for rain intensity.

Thanks @langers2k for the explanation. I guess the autolights are perhaps fine on mine? I will do more investigation and see when it comes on / off. Tested the RLS this morning by covering it and the lights came on but wont go off :( Although it is a bit cloudy here in Manchester.

Just one more thing, I noticed a small stone chip slightly on the Light sensor could that cause the erratic behavior?

Edited by singh946

The chip might cause issues for rain sensing but I'd expect light sensing to be fine unless it's causing a shadow/glare on the sensor.

Thanks I will do more investigation today and see if the chip is causing shadow/glare on the sensor.

Also reading up elsewhere it seems a blown fuse could also cause a similar issue?
