Automatic selector switch lock

Featured Replies

Good morning all,

My 53 plate fabia 1.4 16v automatic comfort estate has behaved nearly faultlessly for 5 years..... However from driving home and parking up last night the GREMLINS have been at work.

I jumped in old faithful this morning, started engine, depressed brake and then couldnt move the selector lever in the car, on looking down the "DEPRESS FOOT BRAKE" light next to the lever remained lit and thus selector remained locked. I tried restarting numerous times; to the neighbours annoyance (well it was 05:30) but with no joy. The selector moves perfectly with engine stopped so not a physical problem.

I checked fuses and they are all good. However if I remove fuse 28 the light goes out, the lock is released and I can select gears, I selected 1 and it allowed the car to drive forward as you would expect.

On the side of safety I stopped the car whilst still on my drive and got a lift in to work.

Having Trawled and I really mean trawled the internet I am still confused as i can not get a definitive answer:

1, I believe the lock mechanism works off the Brake switch when the car is stationary, is this correct??

2, Are there any other fuses or relays to check that I might not have been aware of ??

3, If not should I replace the brake switch?

I dont have access to a code reader so no information there I am afraid.

Any help, advice or suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks again

Rob

3. Replace the brake switch.
