Failed brake light bulb

Featured Replies

Had a brake light bulb failure,

Ah, just a simple replacement I thought, but no, on close inspection, the 'chasis' for the bulb cluster has failed ,the metal strip which carries the current has come away from the plastic, the little blobs that hold it down has degraded and is not securing it to the baseplate, plus it seems the 'cups' that hold the bulbs is breaking away.

Temporarily taped it together for now, but does anyone know of the part number? I guess it's a case of purchasing the pair,as the other side must be same condition.

Has anyone else experienced this?

No experience,  but unsurprising. I can picture exactly what you are talking about. You could try to remove and re-glue tracts, using glue gun or epoxy but maybe more practical to replace both units as you suggest, depending on price!!

Did think of epoxy gluing, but epoxy don't like heat.

Anyway as I wrote ,the cups are breaking up so maybe best to replace.

Not had the car long maybe just about 10 yrs, it's a 56 plate.

Yes, sounds like replacement. The bad news is I doubt the bulb assembly plate is available separately from the rear tail light. See link here for complete part and part number. Pricey though at £75 a unit!!!!!!

A quick call to a skoda part department will confirm one way or the other if there are separate parts available. Or call the skodaparts.com number they are are a physical skoda dealer.

A trawl through ebay may find some more economical items, like pattern parts or used parts. For example:

I understand these are a common failure item.

There are some rather nice looking LED replacement clusters if they are within your budget and you're considering cluster replacement. http://www.dectane-tuning.com/litec-led-taillights-skoda-octavia-1z-04-08-red-crystal-rsk03lrc_54641.html

I've always regarded epoxy as being good at high temperatures and there certainly are high temperature versions available, like these https://www.masterbond.com/properties/high-temperature-resistant-bonding-sealing-and-coating-compounds?gclid=CKOjhNSu-dQCFUWfGwodSrIICw Araldite Rapid and Crystal are good up to 80C. Something like Permabond ET5411 will go to well over 100C

All the best,

Paul.

Thanks for help,T'client and Papfox, the Epoxy I have is for boat building, and is a resin which you use various fillings for type of job, so not suitable.

The links suggested were helpful, not wanting to go the modding route ,I checked out Skoda parts , indeed there is just the bulb holder cluster ,tho only the drivers side, which is fine coz that's what I need! The near side is listed, but coming soon, a beer I find on offer at my local Wetherspoon's a lot!

The bulb cluster comes in at £24 pkg&p.

Now need to check nearside one.

Right , of to pub for cooling foamy pint.

You don't need the actual light cluster, the bulb carriers are available separately...

Be aware that they are different for the hatch and estate.

An even better price! An assembly that does have separate parts available. Wow,  wonders will never cease...
