Dumb tyre question

Featured Replies

Just bought some Octy mk1 spiders 16inch, but they sound like they scrub, only seems to be when cornering or first accelerating up to about 50mph, I think they may be 205/50 is this the reason? Have i messed up here, are all tyres going to need chucking  have I made a major mistake here, apologies for the dumb question,

Thanks

They should be 205/45, you've messed up but a pair of slim steel spacers on the fronts may save you from having to buy new tyres.

You should be able to easily spot the shiny rub marks on the arch liners confirming your fears.

Why did you buy the wrong sized tyres?

Oh wait, they came with, right?

How slim/ what are they likely to cost

Are the backs just going to have to be replaced?

Yes bought the wheels as needed a quick swap asap, tyres came with, there's no danger right? Where exactly is it scrubbing?

Thanks

5mm slim, how the hell should I know, do your own homework.

The rears shouldn't rub since they don't steer.

Yes there's no danger, like I said, look in the wheel arch with a torch and you should see the shiny marks where the tyre has rubbed the plastic arch liner.

In theory 205/50 shouldn't rub/scrub.... I don't know the spec of the 16" spiders though. Combination of increased width and different offset, they could.

The main worry is suppossed to be the offside rear arch liner. As it bulges due to the refueling piping.

Is the car lowered?

Only side that noise seems to come from is back left, the car is completely standard, it's the 1.9tdi elegance if that has any suspension factor,

Thanks

Check the arch liners for witness marks ^^^ as suggested above.

Thanks, jacked it up again, could see the shiny wear marks on back left wheel, cut back at a bit of the plastic and it seems now that there's no scrubbing

Which bit of plastic? Got a piccie?

Will try get a picture for you later, if you put your hand flat on the tyre to the right at 3 oclock and move towards the arch, see the bit in a weird position not the same as arch opening

Might be same issue im having i have mounted some new fabia montes 17ers on my 6y and i also hear something prob from the back guess ill get 5mm spacers front and rear :/

Would love that picture if you can get it since that might be the fix im looking for :)

You could remove the plastic inner arches and then give the inner arches of the car a clean and remove the build up of earth and muck, then put the wheels back on, in the arch it is the design of the car that rubs, this happened when I put 205/55/16 winters on a couple of years ago. Best of luck.
