"EU" Flag Number Plates

Featured Replies

Been looking at the pics of newly delivered Octavias on the O3 forum and I notice people are still getting plates with the EU flag on them?  This seems maybe a bit short sighted to me as I'm guessing they will be technically illegal (at least in the EU) after we leave the EU.

Granted it would be difficult to enforce the law given the number of UK cars with these plates likely to go abroad, but you do hear of people being fined for not have a hi-vis vest in the car and so on.

Contrary to some reports that I've seen, number plates without any flag are perfectly legal here and in the EU (as long as you display a GB sticker), so I would be minded to get those on a new car.

The only upside of the EU flag plates is they include "GB" so no GB sticker is needed (but not clear if this is still so after we leave).  So any advantage is likely to be short lived.

I guess I'm biased as my current 2010 car didn't come with the EU flags and I haven't found it too much of a hardship to stick a magnetic GB plate on when going on the continent. (I didn't actively choose to get the bare plates, it was just what came with the car)

Any thoughts? Please note I'm not looking to start a debate on Brexit, just number plates!

£2 will get you bits to stick over the EU bit if it is an issue,

maybe inflation and Sterling / Euro exchange will make that £4 in 2019.

I never see Dealership putting out Reg Plates with country identifiers other than were a customer asks, or hands in the plates they want fitted.

Can't see it making any difference really, apart from if you run into a really picky foreign copper. As long as it has the GB logo on the bottom, then no real problem
