Featured Replies

hello just picked my new vrs   after weeks of reading this site for info so cheers for that just one thing as you can see above i got this tick tick tick tick sound on idle or tickover is this normal is it the injectors doing there stuff or is it why it's called tickover

other than that its good car and i am impressed so far by it

thanks for your help in my making my choice through reading your posts

i'll be on regular so bye for now

It is difficult to judge noises without hearing them, but I'd say that is perfectly normal.

Probably the charcoal filter thingy in offside front of engine bay - it ticks a lot, and quite loudly. Quite normal.

can you hear this only in the car? As I sometimes here a ticking, and its not my watch ;-)

does the ticking stop when the clucth is depressed??

iirc its a spring or something in the clutch area that catches a bit vague i know but nothing to worry about

usual disclaimer envolved...

Usual causes of rattles inside the cabin are:

The **** on the end of the handbrake

The clear perspex part over the insturments

Heater matrix (sound comes from top centre front of dash)

Also exhaust rattles can be heard from inside, particularly at idle speed.

The rattle from the button at the end of the handbrake is so annoying.

I got my '03 Octy vRS three weeks ago and the one thing that drives me mad is that little noise. I find myself driving everywhere with one hand on the handbrake to stop it rattling.

It wouldn't have mattered in my old Zetec-S as the car rattled all over the place, but in my vRS its the only noise you can hear when inside.

Anybody come up with a cure?

Black electrical insulation tape sarefully stuck/wrapped around the button. Its a tricky procedure to insert it down the side of the button whilst keeping the look tidy - but well worth it.

Heater matrix (sound comes from top centre front of dash)

that must be what mine is, what causes that then?

Not sure why it does it - mine does it and someone here told me thats what it is.

Heater matrix's are usually a pain to change or get to so I've left mine alone.

If someone else can suggest a fix I'll be keen to hear it.

yes ive just seen my mate with a audi tt and we have diagnosed it as the charcoal thingy when we press it it stops ticking ill have a word with the salesman down skoda tomorrow as he owes me a rear wiper blade (he also said someone will get a row as it should have been done before they gave it to me )

cheers for the info i didnt think i d get so many replies

If it ticks at idle its the injectors. It should stop when you rev it.

Probably the charcoal filter thingy

is that the thing to stop petrol fumes from igniting?

I tried that for my **** rattle  but it looked a mess and rattled even more. How do you do it properly then? Seems I would need a very thin rubber tube/sleeve type of thing - any suggestions????

Yep went to dealer, said it's annoying they said oh we will have to replace the whole handbrake for a modified one. I said thats nice, do it then, it was only a year old though.

Seemed to ok since then

If you can get it try "heat shrink". We used it at my last work place to sleeve wires. You slide it on then heat with a hair dryer and it shrinks around the part.

Just an idea - not sure if it'd work though :P

This information was published in the Article section (now replaced) a while ago:

The 1.8T engine makes a number of noises which worry owners but are normal. These include:

A rattling noise like a diesel for a few seconds on startup from cold

This noise is from the hydraulic cam lifter. It stops after a few seconds when oil reaches the lifter.

A turbine-like sound after startup which disappears when the engine is warm

The turbine-like noise is the Secondary air pump operating. It pumps fresh air into the engine on a cold start to keep emmisions down and once the engine is at normal temp it will stop. The pump is mounted in front of the engine just slightly right of centre and looks a little like a siren.

A clicking/ticking noise from a black box attached to the offside wing

This is common to all the petrol engined Octavias. The black box is a charcoal cannister. It basically recirculates engine/petrol vapour fumes back to the petrol tank and the ticking noise is the pump/valve operating.

hi guys my vrs also ticks when idling, worse on colder mornings and its the same old problem that vag engines have had for years.the hyd. tappets

  • 2 years later...

I also have a ticking in the black box in the left part of the engine, between the cooling liquid and the widow washing liquid recipients. What is that box? Is that the charcoal canister? And is this sound normal?

Edit: nevermind, sorry! I had the other search results open in other tabs but didn't get around to reading them :o

Whoa one of my first noob posts lol.

Yes, that's the charcoal canister. Yes, the noise is normal. It is the purge valve on the top of the canister opening to allow the stored vapour to pass to the inlet manifold to be burned.

And should only happen when the engine is warm I may add :)
