Which clutch confusion

Featured Replies

Hi, We are driving to Italy (MotoGp wooHoo) in September and the octy could really do with a new clutch before we go. I phoned a garage advertising clutches on ebay because they had 2 types. For a Luk or Sachs flywheel. He said they are completely not interchangeable even if you change the flywheel at the same time. He said he doesn't know which one we need without us taking the gearbox off to have a look. So clearly that's not happening.

I've had a quote from another place and they just quoted us for a Luk, though this guy has got me worried about which one we need. I've seen people saying we should change to SMF flywheel anyway but how do we know which one we want? Sorry if this is an idiot question.

Thank you for any help/advice it's very much appreciated.

A trip to a local friendly TPS branch can often come up with what's been fitted to the car by them doing a chassis no enquiry and determine if its sachs or luk fitted!

I changed mine recently from sachs to luk, albeit with a new dmf as well.

Google it I believe theres a few ways to tell if the starter motor is removed and look in through the hole.

Probably it's not that easy to say without looking at it.

Even the dealer wasn't sure whether I needed LUK or Sachs and only after removal it was 100% sure.

Hi. Thank you for your replies. Seems what I thought would be an easy one trip job is a bit more hassle than I considered. I'll have a google and see what the starter motor hole May offer. also think I'll nip to the dealer this afternoon.

Stevie D you say you changed from Sachs to luk changing the flywheel too. So if I change the whole lot does it matter which I put in? The retailer I spoke too told me it won't fit if it's the wrong one even if you change the flywheel too.

Thank you again.

If you are changing clutch and DMF then it doesn't matter which brand you fit, as long as it is a matched pair from the same manufacturer. VAG had a habit of fitting both Sachs and LuK at the factory.

Oh, and avoid eBay for clutches. Safest bet is to find a trusted local garage and get them to supply and fit the parts, that way you are covered on both parts and labour if anything goes wrong during the warranty period - plus, a lot of garages are now starting to refuse to fit customer supplied parts due to issues with their public liability insurance.
