TDi Cold Starting!!

Featured Replies

Hi,

When starting my 2001 (110bhp-115k miles) Octavia from cold it cuts out instantly!!!!

It will start second or third time perfectly & there will be no problems unil it's cold again. I have looked through the service book to see when the Glow Plugs needed replacing, I couldn't find any info at all!!

Should I just replace them & hope that is the problem??

How does it tickover once it does start OK? Pretty lumpy?

After a few seconds pretty much perfect!!

The problem is only when firing it up from cold (perfect when warm)!!

OK, just wanted to clarify that as it might help someone else diagnose it. :)

If it is fine except when you try and start if the first time when cold then it may be the engine being too cold, however when you say cut out do you mean die or actually cut out cleanly?

Suggestions to diagnose are:

- Try turning engine to pre-start position, then back to off then to pre-start 2 or 3

times before starting. This will cause glows to heat more than once.

- Try starting with your foot slightly on the accellerator as the extra fuel may keep

the engine running.

You can take a glow plug out and see if it "glows" with the correct voltage across it, however if you do this to test them then make sure you are not touching it as they get hella hot hella quick :)

If they all glow, then check the supply with a multimeter etc to make sure the supply to each plug is there.

The timer unit/relay could be shot, but this is v rare and i don't even know if the TDI has these.

It does sound like glow plugs with the miles you have on it if you have never had a new set. I had them lasting about 60-80k on old XUD engined cars which use them much more than a direct injection engine.

If it is the glows then get all 4 done, as when one goes the otherw ill shortly.

They are also a pretty easy DIY job on most cars (comparable to sparks).

If the glows all work however it could be poor compression on one or more cylinders. I sometimes find that new oil in the car will help cold starting too, however that is not a long term solution.

Hope that all helps

Did you ever get this sorted?

mmm, my 2001 110TDi does not have glow plugs....

Sounds more like a lack of fuel to me! Maybe a leak in a fuel hose somewhere.

are you VERY sure you don't ??

i am here in cz using parts look up charts and i can see them clearly :P

most common cold start problem and easiest to fix - whip them out and check them across a battery. duff one show up fast - they stay cold or dont heat the tip, or are cracked..

to multimeter check them easily, you need to take off the terminals, in which case you might as well whip them out anyhow...

if hot starting OK - then assume plugs, or power to plugs. both simple to check B4 paying any mechanic or garage for their lifting the bonnet.

A diesel wouldn't start at all without glowplugs, would it?

I had the same problem at 95k miles.

Glow plugs burned out, all four. You can easily check it out without screwing out. Apply resistance meter between the top of each glow plug and earth (engine). If the value is an infinity they are gone.

As cheezemonkhai said you should replace all four. You can use WD40 10min before to reduce possibility of thread damage when screwing out.

Another reason for cold star can be related to the battery. After the glow plugs change in my Octy I wasn't quite happy. If fact it was improvement but I wasn't satisfied. It turned out that the battery was very dry. I toped up with destil water and now it's much better.

Cheers,

Rob

I thought the older diesel engines had glow plugs, but the more recent common rail and PD engines are now without glow plugs.

I can jump into my 2001 110 TDi Octy and turn the key and it immediately starts - no chugging or cloud of white smoke or anything.

My 306HDi does not have glow plugs either....

there are quick start glow plugs that need a second to warm, these are more expensive than the older type plugs...

the peugeot may have an inlet manifold glowplug that ignites a bit of diesel to warm things up - but this only gets used in subzero temps....

but the 110tdi HAS plugs.

ok.... I stand corrected ;-)

HTH

:) Its not the cold start relay above the pedals is it ? it has been known to have dry joints inside, I think its marked 106 and coloured black, the grey coloured ones are better.;)

Hello, I dont have the answer to the problem, more of another question. is the TDi engine in skodas direct or indirect injection?

Strictly speaking direct injected engines do not need them. I believe the perkins prima, once used in the "metro" did not have glow plugs as this was direct injection. I dont think any large diesels ie truck and bus engines have glow plugs either. once again they use direct injection.

So, if a 110TDi doesn't start first time when cold, then spits out a cloud of white smoke, and chugs for a while its the glow plugs that are at fault??

What if it only has 35k miles and is less than 3 yrs old, should this be happening??

My 2003 110TDi does have glows, and so does yours, it's just that unless the wether is v cold the plugs come on for only a split second if at all.

DI engines don't use the plugs like the IDI ones do

Eeep...

That doesn't sound nice. :S

I would certainly check the following:

- Fuel filter, make sure it has been drained or changed as water in fuel can lead to white smoke.

- Glows, make sure these are working ok. (see instructions on checking throughout this post)

- Check nothing blocking air intakes and filters.

I wouldn't say it's any of these for sure, but these are the ones you can check yourself before being stung for like
