Roof box for Yeti

Featured Replies

Hello! First day on here, very glad to find this group. The last time anyone had a discussion about roof boxes for the Yeti seems to be 6 years ago, so I thought I'd ask afresh what people recommend?

We'll be using it for luggage as the dog goes in the boot (I have no plans to go skiing ever so that criterion is not important!)

i just got the biggest that Halfords sold about 5 years ago, still use it on my Alhambra occasionally,

only thing to watch is you cant have it back to far and still open the boot so if its to long it sticks out the front and is quite noisy

Welcome to the Forum. I've just got the small Halfords one.  With the lid up to load it feels pretty flimsy, wobbling from side to side, but once the lid is down and locked it feels solid enough and I've not had any problems. The only thing to watch out for when loading it is to allow for the jointed lid supports to fold in  anythong solid packed underneath and the lid won't go down.

If you only need it occasionally and it's big enough it could be suitable for not a lot of money.

I was looking at one type at Go Outdoors it was reasonably priced and huge!

I actually bought a "Keeper" Roof Bag, very expensive but I got mine direct from USA

at a reasonable price. It is huge but the lioness doesn't like the look of it so it is in the loft right now.

I still think it is a better option than a roof box but better still I bought a Brender-up trailer with an ABS lid.

I can thoroughly recommend these guys. Very knowledgeable and helped me out at very short notice, when a change in car (old shape to new shape Yeti) left my old roofbox not fitting.

We ended up with a Thule, which opens from either side. Been in regular use for several years now, along with the (admittedly noisey) OEM Yeti roofbars.

I'd originally had a Karrite roofbox, which worked well enough with the Yeti roofbars, but only opended on 1 side, which proved to be significantly incovenient. I then moved from the orignal Yeti to a facelift and, on the morning we were leaving for a holdiay, discovered the mounting holes in the roof bars weren't compatible with my original box (different spacing on the facelift).

I visited the Journey centre (link above) and we tried a number of options, before settling on the Thule tour 200. This was around £100 more than the Karrite box, but opens on both sides, which has proved to be a major bonus when packing / unloading. The Thule quick release "claws"  (pictured below) were also a major improvement on those supplied with the Karrite box.

The Thule box has been used for many times and still functions as new.

That's great thank you, I see they are in Rotherham so that's easy enough from York.

What a smashingly helpful bunch of replies, thank you. I feel a lot better informed now.

Lots of good used boxes Thule and Halfords on Gumtree and Ebay.

I've had several on other cars, and never bought a new one yet. A lot of people buy them for holidays and then  never use them again. Our last Thule had the claw clamps as shown, and was so easy to put on when needed. It was almost £200 new. We got it for £65, not a mark on it.

Welcome to the forum! Can't embed the link for some reason but search: 'yeti roof box length' on this forum and you'll find lots of good info and recent pics too!

Best wishes, M

On Saturday I sent the husband and kids off to The Journey Centre, as per pinkpanther's recommendation, and they came back with this very smart Thule. Really pleased with it; it came off so easily to go in the shed for now. It's going to get a lot of use, and if the kids misbehave, there's always the threat of The Roof Box!
