Recoding to change instruments

Featured Replies

Hello All,

I have just inherited my late father's 2012 Fabia 3 cylinder. Absolutely lovely little car. Styling's grown on me (can't say I like the chrome strip above the grille though- very expensive to get a black one so I may have to live with it for now). And it's a lovely thing to drive. I'll spend a bit of time and money plugging a few gaps in the spec. I have bought foglamps - genuine Hella ones at a very reasonable price from Eurocar spares but I'm going to have to buy some aftermarket loom kits to fit them as it's very tricky trying to 'go original' because so much on a modern car seems to need coding in. I'll post something once I've done that job.

I've fitted an aftermarket Auto light switch from EBay which came from China . It works very well and, being meant for a MkIV Golf,  looks and feels a bit more up-market as well as giving me the front foglamp position.

I've also got a set of Roomster  16'' alloys for reasonable money that have good tyres but need one hell of a lot of rubbing back before I repaint them Anthracite. I might put winter tyres on the original steel wheels. I'll post pictures when I'm done.

The major thing I would really like to do is change the instruments. I know the standard ones do the job- there is a fuel gauge of  sorts and there is a warning lamp to alert you that the engine is still cold. But a set with actual dials and a Maxidot would be great. My question is - does anyone know some one who can re-code the cluster if I can get hold of a secondhand one ? Would I need to get anything else to get MaxiDot functioning or is everything already in the instrument cluster? Any help and advice greatly appreciated. Needless to say, main dealers are not really interested in this sort of thing. The official line with most modifications - even very small ones- is that it isn't possible.

Thanks

Looks like you have done a fair bit to revamp the car!! Ebay stock the black top grill for something like £45, thats how much I paid for mine!

A few people have asked about changing the cluster for a Maxidot one but from what I have read its very complicated and time consuming job with a lot of coding etc etc! for what its worth it will probably cost a fair bit more than its worth but if someone on here can do it then sure why not!

To add, I've managed to retrofit maxidot into a standard car.

I plan on putting a full colour 3D dash into my Monte Carlo before I sell it.

Was it a hard retrofit?? I always thought it was so hard it wasn't worth it...

If you have £6,000 worth of technology it's ok :D
