Separated my broken turbo actuator. Amazed that a tiny broken part can lose you hundreds!!

Featured Replies

Few weeks back I was getting limp mode and no boost. Eventually worked out it was my turbo actuator.

So I replaced it (£135) new.

Today I stripped my old one down amazed to find that the culprit to my boost problems was a bit of rubber that possibly costs less than a £1!!

Please see pics.

(actuator is off my vrs cr tdi)

I was expecting the blue rubber diaphragm to be split but it was fine!!

But it was this little one...

3 weeks of limp mode caused by this. VW replace the whole turbo unit and not just the actuator. You'd shelling out over a thousand pound just because of this little culprit.

Anyone know how I can get the part number for this???

Until someone else chimes in I would suggest you get the turbo specifics and ask the manufacturer or a rebuild specialist, I doubt Skoda will have a part number for the part on its own.

Amazing! Max unlycky tought!

Then i Will know if my turbo "dies" I Will Aldo open the turbo and check IT. Thanks for Sharing :)

Could you buy the actuator without buying the entire turbo?

Yes I've bought one and fitted. I was just making a point that vw themselves will not just supply and fit an actuator on its own, they will only replace the whole lot which costs over a grand which is crazy when the problem is just that little rubber piece.

So far my response from turbo specialists is 'no' basically.

Yeah, cool that you could actually do that. As a comparison, in Denmark, even the scrap yards make you buy the whole turbo....

Not an expert but I would be glad to be able to buy the actuator separately instead of taking a broken one apart and trying to replace the rubber piece only... then it's very much down to the quality of the work... and we all know it's hard to find a competent garage to do this for you. :)

To be fair, it looks like you had to be reasonably brutal to disassemble the thing enough to get to that broken rubber bit, so it wouldn't be what you might call 'serviceable'?

I agree that it is near-criminal to expect to have to buy a whole new turbo just for that though.   What's inside the black plastic bit at the top, in your palm in the first pic?

Potentiometer for position feedback?

I had no luck getting an actuator for a KO4 from Audi when I had my TT about 5 years ago. They too wanted to sell me a whole turbo for a grand and wouldn't do just the actuator. Went with a forge piston type instead which worked fine

It was a pain opening up but as there are companies selling reconditioned ones I thought the parts inside must be replaceable.

The black plastic at the top has nothing in it at all, actually looks fake but obviously not.

Ill post pic a bit later for you.

I heartily approve of the 'take it apart to see how it works/what failed/how it can be fixed' attitude.

Well, they should when ETKA give them PN 03L198716A for the actuator (ETKA state 131€ without german VAT), which is not openable=serviceable part. When VAG service replaces whole turbo in such case, that is a robbery in daylight or incompetence, not sure what is worse ...

Sorry I didn't word myself to good.

They will supply the actuator separate, but they will not 'supply & fit' the actuator on its own incase they have any comebacks on a failing turbo.

piece of mind for them playing it save but emptying our pockets at the same time.
