Poor fuel consumption

Featured Replies

Hi all.

I have a Y 2001 1.4 8v Fabia. Ive been averaging my last 6 tanks of fuel and getting about 30mpg. is this far too low?

Mostly town driving but not all slow driving.

Official Skoda figure is 39mpg.

Hiya Dan, I also have a 1.4 8v (X reg), which on a long run driving like a granny I can get about 39 mpg. Real world driving is much closer to 30, especially if this involves town driving.

I find the MPG readout way over optimistic, so never trust that, just brim with fuel every time then work it out. Also, as a side note, the speedo is way over as well on mine, 80mph on the speedo is 72 according to GPS speed, and Ive tested this on a variety of roads, and checked in different cars which dont seem to have such a large difference between GPS and Speedo speed.

Cheers.

RBW.

Yeah ive been working it out on brimming the tank, as I dont have an MPG counter on my classic.

I also find my speedo to be about 10% over according to GPS!

:)

Does seem a little strange Dan, Although mines a Diesel (vRS) and is AmD mapped, I can average up to 60mpg granny driving around town. Surely even though yours a petrol, somethings seems wrong.

I Have found the most economical way to drive the 8v is to allways try to keep it above 2.2-2.5k RPM. I Know realistically it's hard to stick to all the time. If you change at around 3.5k in each gear you should hit around 2.2 for the next gear, therefore keeping it in the powerband where it is most economical. There is little point in going past 3.5 as the power stays the same pretty much. I'm also using BP Ultimate, and have been for several hundered miles, and I am getting just over 40, so maybe you could give that a try to?
