2014 1.4 140ps - oscill and things to look-out

Featured Replies

Not owning a Skoda any more but recommending them to people I know that their needs match the features of the cars, hence I went with a friend today to check out a 2014 1.4 140ps for him with  34000km on the clock, manual. Overall felt nice, solid and comfortable as I expected, he liked it very much. The only thing I discovered during the test-drive was an oscillation/rattle which seemed like it could be some plastic item being tuned at a specific rpm, from the front of the dash or engine bay but not something from the engine as such. Came in at 4500 and went out at 4700 roughly. Does that ring a bell to any other owners of this engine?

Also, any issues in general with this engine to look-out for? Oil consumption maybe? I imagine/hope it is not the same CAV engine found on the MKII Fabia vRS (minus the supercharger obv.) that I know well from my experience with it but wouldn't recommend...

Overall it felt great for what it is and at a very good price as well so if that noise is something known or easily fixed I would advise him to go forward, with an added 1yr warranty to begin with just for the piece of mind.

Thanks

These are new engines not related to the CAV twin charger engines.

Good to hear, so I take it they are pretty much trouble free?  I want to forget about that oscillation thingy as it didn't sound too scary.

Quite common to get a vibration noise apparently coming from the B pillar at around 2000 rpm.

I say apparent because the most common source of the noise are the fuel lines at the base of the pillar and apparently simple to fix.

I get this noise occasionally but just when I am getting resolved to fix it the outside temperatures change and it disappears until next time.

Hmm, I have experienced fuel lines rattle but that was as you say at 2500 rpm and it was doing it when going past this rpm range both up and down (accelerating and decelerating). In the car we drove it was coming in at 4500 (if it wasn't for me to take it up to 5500rpm he wouldn't have noticed at all)  and it didn't do it when lifting the foot off the gas and the rpm dropping below 4500, so not sure it's the same thing.

On another note, which is the top (or top two) OEM infotainment unit for these cars? The car didn't even have BT so if he's going ahead with it we are retro-fitting a head-unit, preferably a Skoda one with BT, Media and GPS.

Find out what Skoda system it has now, probably Swing, or Bolero, Amundsen is sat nav and Columbus.

Difficult to retrofit these days as VW has put component protection on to prevent theft.

Might be easier cheaper to fit a Parrot BT system.

Will do, it must be the most basic system there is for this car though, tiny screen, no BT, let alone GPS. The Swing system in my MKII Fabia had at least BT Phone and Audio streaming. Was thinking that a compatible aftermarket system would probably be easier for the exact same reason you mention, will keep it in mind.

EDIT: This is the one in the photo.

That looks the same Swing I have fitted in my 2014 Octavia and mine does have Bluetooth phone and audio facilities.
