Wheel bearing change.. What is disturbed?

Featured Replies

Front wheel bearings on my 2003 Octy vRS were changed under warranty recently. I now have uneven tyre wear on the front nearside..

Could someone in the know! tell me what is disturbed when replacing bearings

and what alignment checks are done afterwards?

cheers

IIRC the drive shaft will need to be removed from the hub, to do that usually involves disconnecting ball joints and other suspension components. If you have uneven wear, it sounds like somethings not been put back to how it was.

The lower ball joint is attached to the lower arm by 3x M10 bolts on a bracket. Removing these saves disturbing the ball itself. The top of the hub is secured directly to the strut.

I would think it is most the steering arm that has been put back incorrectly.

It is possible that rather than dismantle the steering arm ball joint they've unscrewed the end.

No matter how carefully they've measured before / after the chances are this is where the error is.

Needs a 4 wheel laser alignment.

before the car went in the steering wheel used to be dead centre when traveling in a straight line now after its slightly off to the left.. There is still a wheel bearing type niose... sort of a humming from the steering wheel... Similar

to a phone vibrating or a electric shaver.. with an accompainong noise...

I almost religousy check tyre pressures and tread condition and depth, and on the near side front has started to wear more on the outer 1/3 than anywhere else...

However the wheel bearings were changed at 59K miles now i'm at 62K and the dealer is saying that it might be a chargeable task.... I thought anything reported under warranty would be covered until fixed?

Well as expected the dealer is playing dumb....

It says on my previous warranty work invoice that both front wheel bearings and

hubs were changed.

The hubs do not look new so have they actually done them?

Also I can visually and using my tread depth guauge see that my front nsf tyre is wearing more now.

The TWI are almost level on the outside 1/3 of the tyre.. I've not hit any kerbing,

Also the tyre pressures are at standard and are usually checked weekly...

The situation is prob now that as the car is outside its warranty then they don't want the hassle...

Is there anyone in the 'trade' than can assist on the actuall procedure?

cheers
