Excessive oil use for PD engine?

Featured Replies

Hello everyone. I've noticed that my AXR-engined PD 1.9 TDI (100 HP) estate uses about 300/400ml of oil every 3000 miles, or so. The car drives well (averaging 53 MPG) and pulls ok. Is this normal for a PD engine? The smoke out the back of the car is light grey when pushed hard, but not a large amount.

Many thanks :)

You don't mention mileage, that's important but chances are it's the turbo seals weeping.

Sorry Sep. It's only done 60k :)

I wouldnt be worried about that atall :) one top up between services is ok

Have you taken the under shield off and had a look to see if you can see any traces of a slight oil leak? Any blue smoke on start up or when you give it some?

As said above it's not a huge amount of oil to loose for that mileage.

Thanks for the replies, everyone. I get no real smoke when I start up - maybe a little bit of a grey puff, if I've been gunning it around town. I do get a nice chuff of grey (sometimes black!) smoke, if I give it some beans! So 300ml of oil in 2-3k is acceptable?

Purely as a comparison, my AXR is approaching double your mileage and uses barely a drop of oil in between oil changes every 5k miles.

Like yours, mine does like sending out smoke signals if I give it some beans.

It doesn't seem like a lot to be using, but if it's only a recent thing, I'd keep my eye on it.

Go and ask in the mkII forum if they think it's a lot :D

I've had a few PD's that have needed to be topped up a bit between 10K services and have gone on to do a lot of miles so I wouldn't worry about it if there are no other symptoms

Mine is also AXR and has always used a bit of oil between services. It reached a critical stage recently and went to using a pint every thousand miles.

Just had the turbo reconditioned as just over 50k miles.

What I would say is that the EGR value and the anti shudder valve were very clogged with coke and black tar, so that may have contributed by pulling oil through the crank case breather.

Short journeys and a not very sympathetic first owner probably have not helped.
