Amundsen vs Columbus

Featured Replies

I've just spent the morning speccing my new Octavia SE L Estate and have really struggled with justifying an extra £1k for Columbus.  I spent a while playing with the systems in a couple of demos, but neither had the Infotainment activated.  I'm coming from a Yeti with a smaller Amundsen.  So - clear to see, the slightly larger Columbus screen with no nobs and the home screen which looks good with the nav and smaller phone and audio tiles.  Also the ability to get Google Earth (which wasn't working but we have it on our Audi so I know what it's like).  Nav programming things like post codes is improved on Columbus, the Amundsen was the same to programme as the Yeti's smaller screen, but apart from that the menus are the same.  Also, clearly the hard drive based maps on Columbus over the SD maps on Amundsen.  I'm not bothered about the absence of the CD/DVD with Amundsen.  All differences that can be seen.

However, I'm not clear what is the difference between the Infotainment on line (one year) on the Amundsen and what you get with Columbus (for 3 years I believe).  I'm not totally convinced that the salesman was 100% sure and know people on here will have the precise answer.  For example, in our Audi we often send destinations to the car/nav via phone - I know Columbus can do this - can Amundsen (for the first year at least)?  After that, how much is it to maintain the online service?  In the end, I couldn't justify Columbus and so have stayed with Amundsen - hopefully with no regrets.

Al least having listened to both, ordering Canton speakers was a fairly easy choice.
