Mini Imposter

Featured Replies

The 'new' Mini has been a revalation for BMW as we all know. I was even one of those who were conned into thinking it was a Mini when in reality it barely resembles the original.

I saw a Mini 1000 (1976 - S) great condition next to a Cooper in a car park yesterday next to each other.

To be honest, I think the new one doesn't even resemble the original from all angles, looks more like a hideous Mini on Steroids.

I'm not saying that the new one isn't a good car but the fact is that with all the colour options nowdays, don't you think that they've just lost the plot a little ?

I know they thought they were clever to copy the Italian Job mini colour scheme, but some of them now really do look rediculous.

It looked o.k with the Union Flag scheme in the beginning but it's gone a bit far now.

I think the Italian Job analogy just about sums it up - the new mini is as right for the car, as Sylvester Stallone was for the part of Charlie Croker. :thumbdwn:

The wife has a BMW Mini & it's surprising how big it is.

It's probably as big a Ford Fiesta, but still the boot is tiny. We only manage to get a weeks worth of shopping into the boot.

The various stripes & roof decals are a bit OTT. Looked thro' the accessories brochure a few months ago & there was an option of tiger stripes for the roof!

The wheelbase of the MINI (as it must be known, according to BMW - yet another example of how stupid the whole marketing thing is!) is the same as the Mk1 Land Rover Discovery. So quite where all the luggage space has gone is a bit of a mystery! You could always shell out an extra £7000 for a coachbuilt MINI Wagon:

Believe it or not, that's NOT been photoshopped!!!

As for roof decals, there's an S near where I work in dark grey with dark grey / black tiger stripes on the roof. Reminded me of the Animal watchstrap I used to have on my Swatch Chrono in about 1993... :P

My mum recently looked at replacing her Corsa with a Mini.

She said - "The one thing about the Mini is that it isnt Mini !" The wide arches wouldnt fit through their (admitedly narrow) garage doors.

Mini used to be mini by name and mini by nature. Not anymore.

For some reason,no matter how you supercharge it/put spots on it/stripes it just does not work like it did on the old one.

Can't put my finger on it

When all is said and done......... I'd still have a grey one with black stripes, double glass roof and tinted windows

Knew it.You're a cross dresser;)

They're fun cars, both old & new, the old one was a unique car that has strengths/weaknesses, the new one is definitely an upmarket car for it's size (no pun intended) and although loosely based on the mini, the MINI is in fairness targetting a totally different market.

Same kinda thing applies to the VW Beetle, although they are probably closer to each other size-wise at least.
