Hi, the covers for this bolt on both front doors has perished and falling apart. I've ordered a couple of new ones but wondering what this locating bolt actually does? If the cover gets 'hit' every time the door gets shut its no wonder it wears out.

That bolt secures the lock cylinder hidden under the cover beside the outer pull handle.
