Rear wheel sticking after releasing handbrake

Featured Replies

Afternoon all,

When my 2006 1.2 has been left overnight the rear brake(s) stick after releasing the handbrake, and I have to give the car some throttle to make it move. It has been like this for a month but I had another issue to fix and i've been leaving it in gear instead.

What is the fix for this?

Mine does the same, try and avoid going through deepish puddles etc. Try and dry the rear shoes out by applying the handbrake on, off, on at slow speed on a country road. It may take a few days to fully dry out.

DB.

It's quite a common thing when the weather is damp. Mine sometimes does it and the Escort I had before it did it.

It was a common problem on ye olde Cavaliers, with the cheaper rear shoes. It's down to certain shoes giving out a glue like substance with water on drum brakes, Glue like substance settles on surface of shoes. Apply handbrake and overnight the "glue " sets, locking the shoes to drum. Simplest cure in wet weather is to leave in gear. I had this on a few occasions in the wet capital of the west coast- Fort William, where mechanic showed me how to remove shoes from drum, and more importantly how to prevent it - leave car in gear with handbrake off.

Something getting lost  with the advent of disc brakes is how to prevent water degradation f drum brakes in the wet season- for al you foks with classics- with drums front and rear- it's dry them out every mile or so. Problem was that VW stuff in the reg years suffix P/R/S were programmed to kill power when brakes applied, so it was dip clutch and apply brakes. I've not tried mine to see if this still applies, but with discs in front, it don't really matter, as it's only drums all round that have this affliction. .
