Hi everyone is there any set figures for regen my car seems to be doing it around every 100 miles or so but I don't do much motorway driving it's 2.0 tdi superb with 21000 miles on the clock

  • Hi redfab since the roll back it's like a different car regen as gone from 100 miles to 250 miles and the filter never reaches 100% it gets to about 80 % and the mpg is a bit better so all looks well

    Been to have update removed today 120 quid at sharks at Mansfield 

There are no set figures. It all comes down to the nature of the journeys that you do. Lots of short trips = lots of regens.

I am thinking of using an adative such as stp do you think this will help seem to get through some juice as well

You don't state what year the car is. I had a 63 plate  Octavia Tdi Vrs and it too did many regens with short milage in-between. I think the car regened often to keep the DPF as clean as possible where as my old 07 Plate Tdi Vrs only did a regen when the DPF was getting full. I would think yours is working as it should.

Your DPF has had a hard life.

 

4 years old, 21,000 miles = 5,000 miles a year.

 

This will explain the repeated regens.

 

All should be OK but it is likely you'll see a premature failure at some point.

Mine is doing regens about every 150 miles and 25 grams - down to 5.5 grams in 25 minutes - last two regens were done when stationary - didn't want to turn engine off.

Mostly short trips in town - less than 3 years old and 22k miles on the clock.

Are you sure 5000 a year it's not many miles when the average is 15000

I always use Shell V-Power - I know it costs more but so does an additive. It's ages since I was last aware of a regen and only then because the engine smelled a bit hot when I parked up. BTW - my car has 93k miles on it but mostly long motorway and dual carriageway trips  ... 120 + miles.

 

I have decided to invest in an OBD2 reader with a bluetooth connection to my phone on which I will install the VAG-DPF app. I can then keep a close eye on regens.  Total outlay just over £12 so won't break the bank.

5,000 miles is low annual mileage.

 

Ultimately the DPF needs to get hot to be able to passive regenerate (no car or driver input, the soot is burnt off through normal driving), if this isn't effective you'll see an active regeneration which is what you're seeing now. If these are unsuccessful or are regularly interrupted the car will keep attempting a regeneration until it can burn off sufficient soot levels.

 

Regular repeated regens are a sign that the DPF isn't getting hot enough for long enough, which with low annual mileage is expected.

 

DPF's covering low mileage, short journey times or low average speeds will have a harder life.

 

DPF's are also far better now than they used to be which means they are far better at looking after themselves. Regular regens aren't necessarily a bad thing, but your DPF is working harder than normal which will shorten its life.

 

Opinion varies a lot but for anything less than 15,000 miles a year I'd be choosing a petrol over a diesel. 10 years of fuel savings can be wiped out instantly with the premature failure of a DPF or EGR.

Thanks mate iam looking  at getting the app to help me see how much soot is gathering I hope this helps

@Razzertrevor it's some cheap ELM knock off for few quid - Bluetooth and you don't have to do anything :) just start the app and click Connect - would be nice if it connect automatically.

Razzertrevor, seen your other posts in the VAG DPF thread, 

How long have you had your Superb?  Has it had the emissions software update?

This is causing alot of people massive problems with regens more frequently than they were prior to the software update.

Bought on 4th august but don't know if it s been updated is there any way of finding out the car came fron devon

Razzertrevor, I think there lies your problems.

Mine hasnt been done and is not going to be.

Do some searching online theres massive problems.  Theres a facebook site dedicated to people with these issues.  Their aim is to lobby VW to take responsibility for what they have done & therefore they dont discuss ways to sort it out.

Id say the only way to sort it out is have an aftermarket specialist company revert the software back to the version prior to the update.  Before it causes too much damage to your engine and its associated parts.

Thats the other option people are using.  Getting rid.

 

If you take it to a dealer they will deny the fix causes any issues.  They are all working to a script.

This cleared a lot. I have done 260 000 kms now and never noticed regen in process. Few weeks ago went to local service for regular maintenance and they accidentally performed the emissions remap (I had refused one several times). After that I can often see lots of white smoke in the rearwiew mirror when accelearting.

Yes it has been updated before I bought the car will keep looking for someone to reverse the update if that's possible
