What do you folks think of dropping Friday practise? That seems to be a current talking point.

 

I'd not be against it, but I hope they'd extend the practise allowed on Saturday and maybe open up a new session on Sunday. Practise closest to the actual event time would be more valuable, especially in locations with erratic weather.

given that Liberty want to extend the festivities / event to beyond just the race weekend (milk the fans for as many days as possible) I'd be surprised if they did away with any of the actual driving on the Friday

Liberty want more events. Dumping Friday could make for a 25 race season.

Gist:

  • 1.6 Litre, V6 Turbo Hybrid
  • 3000rpm higher engine running speed range to improve the sound
  • Prescriptive internal design parameters to restrict development costs and discourage extreme designs and running conditions
  • Removal of the MGUH
  • More powerful MGUK with focus on manual driver deployment in race together with option to save up energy over several laps to give a driver controlled tactical element to racing
  • Single turbo with dimensional constraints and weight limits
  • Standard energy store and control electronics
  • High Level of external prescriptive design to give ‘Plug-And-Play’ engine/chassis/transmission swap capability
  • Intention to investigate tighter fuel regulations and limits on number of fuels used

They mention keeping up with road relevance, in that case I don't understand standardising one of the largest areas up for development, the battery. I also don't understand how 15000 RPM engines are road relevant.

You can always tell when a new set of regs are being developed, Ferrari threaten to quit.

Can't disagree with the main points though. F1 isn't a spec series and the ever increasing pull that way in the name of "cost control" and "the show" is not good for the sport.

I'm with you there. I want scary complex, beautifully engineered machines. It's a sad state of affairs when sports prototypes are higher tech and almost as fast as F1.

Well, IMO it depends on exactly what the degree of standardisation actually is. For example, I've never seen any reason why everyone shouldn't use the same engine to firewall and bellhousing bolt patterns given that that we do have rules on the length and V angle of the engines (which Ferrari have already accepted).

We have standard bolt patterns at the moment.

Fact. Marchionne does not own F1.  Liberty do. They just spent billions to own F1.

 

At least Mercedes and Renault just made subtler statements suggesting further changes were required to the proposals rather than throwing their toys.

However, It should be clear to Liberty now that the engine suppliers for 90% of the grid are unhappy with the 2021 engine plan.

 

The FIA will call Ferrari's bluff like they always did before.

 

Remember, both Ferrari (637) and Lotus (96T) went as far as actually building Indycars in the past to back up their threats to leave but never raced them - and that was when CART was really popular, not the national series backwater it is now.

 

Ferrari just want to keep on getting the biggest cut (and their rules veto), and Liberty aren't going to give it.

 

I would love to see Ferrari's road car sales numbers if they did quit, leaving McLaren with the USP of being the only volume Supercar producer in F1.

(Ignoring the German taxi-firm and Aston Martin - a few stickers on a RBR does not make Aston an F1 company)

Mexico        1:16                   1:24.

 

Night and day slower, WEC laptimes are the same as F2/GP2 at comparable circuits in fact.

Indeed. I really hope they don't go too far down that route. Personally I don't even want standard components. Although, forcing cross compatibility between power unit elements could be interesting.

 

I've always wanted F1 to be as unrestricted as possible. A boundary box, mandated tyres, a limit on energy use per race and very strict safety tests. Leave everything else open. Basically, Can-Am but better.

Totally agree. standardized engine is just a stupid idea. This is Formula 1, not Formula Ford, NASCAR, or V8 Supercar or any other sh17 formula where everyone basically runs the same stuff.

1.Grid girls gone, because Liberty are really PC.

To Americans it’s simply a matter of eyeballs for the adds.

The more cars via the generic route the more adds and ultimately the greater value when flogging F1 the next time.

I’ve watched NFL live and shudder at what could be in store now that Carey has his hands on the promotion lever.

 

Indeed, the race start times have just been put back 10 minutes so broadcasters get some decent ad revenue at the start of their shows.

So I guess the actual warmup lap starts 10 minuets after the end of the Young n Restless.

That puts it in proper perspective, a pure yankee takeover ........and something else to give up on.

Theres no interest and no money in F1 TV in the USA.

 

Liberty are pandering to European and ROW broadcasters and advertisers by changing the start time.

 

Indeed something good about F1 coverage Stateside is the split screen during the ad breaks - so you can still see the race.

 

Talking about the future of motor-racing, WTF are Holden going to be racing an import in Supercars? Surely thats sacrilege in OZ?

The US market is the big nut Chase hopes to crack unfortunately.

On cable here, there was such outrage at even the split screen it was promptly dumped........flag to flag zero ads.  :)

Dinosaur racing you mean?     All to do with the brand of beer overtaking the energy drink......that sort of relevance to me,  but I am too old of course.
