Electric Scooters / Motor Cycles.

Featured Replies

Sorry if already a thread, but just interested in anyone's experiences of Electric Scooters or Motor Cycles.

Have you ridden one, owned one or considering getting one.

I have been on an Electric Trials bike a couple of years back and was impressed, not ridden anything else.

My pedal assist push bike is UK limited to 15.5 MPH unless reset for 'Offroad use' and has 90Nm of torque which is fun, up to 40 mile range on a charge.

i will be getting an electric scooter sometime in the future i expect but not needing one now.

@8 minutes.

He should have made the difference from England & Wales and Greenlanes and Scotland & Vehicular Right of Ways, not Greenlanes.

A little bit sideways of the 'official' topic but hopefully close enough ...

With my wife's retirement looming I've started looking at electric-assist bicycles (she is asthmatic and has limited raw pedal power) to get us out and about post-lockdown.

Any experience / advice / recommendations out there?

E-bikes (the pedal assisted bikes), electric scooters and electric mopeds are super popular over here in Germany.

The E-bikes are only allowed to provide electric assistance up to 25km/h.

I've ridden one and they are good. Really take the strain out of climbing hills.

The scooters are limited to 20km/h, allowed to be used on cycle paths but are required to be registered and insured (they have a cute little number plate on the back).

And the electric mopeds are super cool. They get away from the lights super quick but without any of that annoying noise usually associated with mopeds!

Got myself a 800w zipper scooter..........

Already changed out all 3 Lead acid batteries for lithium ion ones so it probably weighs around 22 kgs instead of 40 kgs.

Seems to top out at 25 kph so needs the gearing changed by either the smaller rear sprocket or a larger rear tyre I am thinking.

Only running 3 8AH Li-ion batteries instread of 12AH Lead but still is many kilometers of riding.

Have a 42v charger instead of 36v to match the lithium batteries and put some lights/indicators on it, must be a horn.

Climb hills well too.

Is this for use by you other than in the UK or just on private ground?

Indeed - totally illegal for use within the public highway boundary (ie carriageway or footway).

Probably good fun though?

Something wrong where those with a Driving Licence can get 6 points and a fine, but obviously those without a licence can only be fined.

But then licence holders know the risks.

Was hoping to use on the numerous cycle paths here and down at the caravan park.

Might register as a vehicle or change to a trike or 4  wheel mobility and tune that.

Construction & Use is the issue making them road legal and having them Registered and with a Reg Number.  But anything is possible.

The Motability Trikes / Quads have different speed limits under legislation and Registered Disabled People or those in receipt of the Mobility Part of PIP have already been fined for using Sit or Stand motorised Scooters in Public Places.

Yeah I know.  It is all a bit mad at the moment.

One daughter zooms across York as they have a scheme and users zoom in streets and pavements on the rental scooters.  Appalling lights etc.

I have fitted indicators and lights and happy to meet and go beyond the rental scooters rules.

250 watts is a bit crap so multiple power output selection needed to make progress for us big chaps  rather than 9 stone teenagers.

Personally I think they are the future having seen / used them in Prague but here they are currently only legal in places where trials are underway and there is currently a big backlash from certain organisations representing the deaf / blind / partially sighted, so it remains to be seen if they are legalised nationwide...

Or go 4 wheels and tune....

I like how the battery can be removed (& replaced) .

An expensive Electric Scooter. (but then there are more expensive e-Bikes about.)

There are no such things as 125 cc 'mopeds' are there?

Mopeds as as specced in UK Law / Regulations.  There are Electric Mopeds.

The last true Moped ie something you could use pedal assistance, went out in the 1970s from mainstream I recall with the FS1E ie fizzy being the greatest of them all. 49 cc engine, good for 50 mph in pre-restricted form.

Problem with a£5k electric scooter it is up against a £1400 Chinese bike that is pretty good ie the electric bike would need a £2.5k subsidy like the cheaper EVs cars get.  Lexmoto Assault.

I had a F1SE.  A moped that 16 year olds can drive is still restricted as to power and top speed even though this is very much kidology.  Rory is just too loose with his terminology for a motoring journalist.   Ps. My pals Garelli was a much better moped than mile.

The Fizzy could go two up and got to 50 mph eventually but was killed off by the madness to restrict 50cc bikes for 16 year olds as only being able to so 30,, 31,32 oft meant being squeezed in to the gutter which was more dangerous than going fast.

Even the Fizzy could be ported, compression ration raised, better ignition system to get another 20 or 40% power.  Last bike I had of this type was a Derbi, part of PIaggio, which was a GPR50RR.  9 hp from 50cc.  Also enjoyed the MBX80 with its 179 cc and its 11.5 hp.....  I think the cheap Chinese bikes have killed off the Japanese screamers as well as killing off two strokes due to US emission laws.   Hard for electric bikes to compete with such cheapness for hard up 16/17 year olds.

@lol-lolMy one even with a hot plug could not do 50 one up, and 2 up at 10 mph we could not get around a hut on smooth tar at Barry Buddon Army camp and went right into the corner of the building.

I blame the plonker on the back for that.

I think my friend's FS1E was just before the restriction kicked in and he was and we were all Merchant Navy Engineering students so we had access to all the lathes, milling machines and hand tools we needed/wanted.

The Fizzy was not running an expansion chamber and not even ported I recall, ie lifting the top edge of the exhaust port and widen it slightly but the head was skimmed to optimise ie blue print the squish band of the head to the optimal few thousands of an inch.

Internal channels in the head and entry in to the exhaust smoothed and stepped as well as the inlet side, K&N and rejetted up one or two jet sizes.  Seem to recall it was pre-mix rather than side tank of two stroke oil for the total loss lubrication system.

Tyres up a the max.  Brakes were the scary bit as cannot remember if it was a DX but a recall they were grabby as sintered brake pads and shoes were only just coming in.  50 mph to a long time to achieve as that 40 to 50 mph.

I think there was lots of that going on and lots more BS than actual speed.

I was an Apprentice Motor Mechanic and where i worked and  where my mates and family did we had been tuning racing karts and had we had Scooters and Bikes we ran about on before we had to have mopeds so that we could be legal for a year.

They never really went further than along the coast between Arbroath & Dundee and they were an embarrassment.
