Wishbone bracket problem.

Featured Replies

Hi all,

the bolt has previously been cross threaded into the wishbone bracket. It came out ok....stiff but steady and with copper slip it went in and felt as though it tightened ok but after a few days ive noticed some creaking and chattering from underneath.

On inspection the thread isn't holding any significant tension.

I've phoned around fastener companies and can get a 120mm replacement with a nut to go on the back. It's a 12.9 grade strength but I'm unsure of the pitch of the thread. I know it's a metric fine....does anyone know what pitch the thread is please?

What's the diameter of the thread capriman ?

Lord knows. The original is an m12 100 if that helps?

i'll check out my charts for you for an M12 metric fine thread. I work in an engineering workshop.

according to my zeus tables, M12 fine would be a pitch of 1.25.

That's great thanks. It's a 1.25 pitch that I can get. I'll pick it up tomorrow and fit it and see how it goes.

Cheers buddy

No worries. Hope all goes ok for you.

I seem to remember that there may not be room to put a nut on the end of this bolt; but the extra length of thread will find previously unused, undamaged threads in the console casting, with a bit of luck. The OE bolts don't go all the way up the threaded hole.

Thanks wino, yeah that's exactly my thinking about the extra bit of unused thead. I also am unsure about the room for the nut but if necessary I can grind a small amount of the bracket away to give an extra couple of millimetres.

bolt snapped on the other side so had to buy a new bracket at £75. Reluctant to buy another one!!  :(

By the way, the original thread in the console is 1.5mm pitch as you would expect and not a fine thread into alloy. So if you are buying a longer bolt with 1.25mm pitch you will just damage the final part of that thread.

Good spot. Bolt defined as Item 7 here.

M12 x 1.5  is a fine thread though, standard/coarse for M12 is 1.75 pitch.  Two fine options, 1.5 or 1.25.

Hope the OP hasn't bought the wrong bolt yet.

Thanks, I will compare the threads before I attempt to thread it in. I was told it was a metric fine thread and I do recall it looking like rather a fine thread when I took it out. Can't go wrong if I actually check one against the other :)

@capriman - Can you describe any markings on the bolt head? That will help some of the other guys know exactly what you need.

Thanks everyone for their help. I managed to get a bracket from the local scrappy today for a tenner so all sorted! :)

Good result, a bracket with threads for a tenner!
