Engine guard/under tray issues

Featured Replies

Hi guys,

Just joined here so a big hello to all.

Having trouble with the under tray guard on my Octavia. Its scraping the roda and falling off. I wondered if anyone had any suggestions. My thoughts are to take it off completely rather than pay an excessive amount for a piece of plastic that some other cars dont have. Would I risk any harm being done or any unwanted things crop up if I remove it???

Any ideas/suggestions would be appreciated.

Cheers,

I had the plastic engine undertray on my Fabia come away at the rear mounting and drag along the road. I assume the screws had rusted through or something as I hadn't hit anything.

After an embarrassing 50 mile trip dragging it round, I ended up just taking unscrewing the front mountings and taking the whole thing off. I couldn't really see the bit of plastic offering any protection against anything that could damage the sump/engine and I didn't notice any difference running with it off.

Saying that, the chap who bought it from me bought a replacement undertray which I think was around

IIRC the sump on some VAG engines is quite vulnerable.

Additionally the golf platform already runs pretty low, so for the sake of a bit of plastic or a few washers etc to fix it if possible, I would replace it.

I am sure an OEM version can be picked up a lot cheaper than a main dealer version.

Try euro-car-parts if you don't have any luck elsewhere.

Thanks for the input guys. ive just had it up on a ramp and Ive had to take all 3 bits of the plastic guard off - they were dragging badly so they had to come off. Rung around to try to find a replacement guard, but have been directed to Skoda dealers so far. I'll keep looking.

Thanks again....

On my Elegance, the plastic undertray doesnt cover the sump anyway.

Very true, so you're better off with a metal sump guard than a bit of flimsy plastic which isn't going to stop anything ;)

Chris

But if you're too tight to buy a plastic undertray from the dealer, £200+ for the metal item + fitting may be a little too much ;)

Or you could just make your own ;)

I believe it's mainly a sound-deadening thing, although on wet and salty roads, I'd prefer to have more protection than inviting general crap in to my engine bay.

True about the metal being better than the plastic.

I'll have to look see if my saump is covered.

If you want the plastic, i was just thinking, best place is a breakers yard, where the car has been rear ended etc.

thanks for these guys. yeah i thought a breakers was probably a good bet. just need to track down a not too wrecked model. would usually go to the dealers but i'm pretty skint so carefull shopping is needed for this one. i got quoted over 100 quid for the tray, which sounds a lot to me:eek:

cheers,

dez
