Driving Mode and ECO

Featured Replies

I've noticed that unlike on my previous car with the same 1.4TSI/DSG combination (and Audi A3), when you select ECO mode or set Drive to ECO in individual mode, it will revert to normal when you next start the car. You have to reselect ECO or Individual to get the gearbox back into E mode.

I wonder if this is because ECO mode and coasting doesn't actually save much fuel?

I'm sure on the demo 2.0TSI DSG I had it worked like on the Audi.

  • My 2017 Superb 2.0 TSI 4x4 remembers E/S. If i stop the car in E, it will also start up in E. (both mode, and gear indicator in the Maxi-dot)

  • I agree. When coasting in gear I get a lot of engine braking on my 280. When coasting in Eco, it's amazing how it retains speed and the distance it goes. To achieve the same speed over the same distan

I have a 2.0TSI DSG and I see the same behaviour as you.  Select ECO mode, switch off ignition, back on.  Steering, drive etc set to eco but the gearbox will be back in D.

Same in individual which is what I use - with drive in ECO but it's not leaving it like that on the next restart.

I wonder why they have done this. The Audi didn't do this and I'm pretty sure the demo Superb didn't either.

2016.week-8 2.0 TSI 220ps DSG6 remembered `E` after few uses

My 2017 2.0 TSI 220 DSG L&K remembers the driving mode. I have been driving in ECO for a couple of weeks or so now and it always starts in ECO.

It will start in ECO Mode on mine but the gearbox indicator in the Max Dot display shows D for drive rather than E for ECO. The demo car I had did not forget this.

So does the gear indicator in the maxi dot display have an E in front of the gear number or a D when you restart the car? And does it do the coasting function?

In the case of mine, the E will be there if I select ECO mode or have Individual with drive set to ECO. Stop the car and restart and it reverts to D. I haven't checked but I wonder if it does the same for Sport revering to Normal?

This is how I remember the demo car I had worked. My Audi was also the same.

But the car manual suggests that it reverts to normal for gearbox after you stop. I wonder if there's a way to reprogramme so it works differently?

Gearbox reverts to D after ignition off/on in the Golf I am currently having to drive while mine is out of action. 67 plate 6 speed DSG.

  • 1 month later...

My 5 week old 280 comes up in D rather than E after a re-start. Have to switch out of Eco, then back in to get E drive back. Doesn't make any sense to me.

I don't typically drive in Eco, but I do like the coasting function that you get in that mode. I don't suppose anyone's figured a way to get coasting in normal drive mode? VCDS mod?

You can set the individual mode to have the drive mode as ECO but it will revert to D on the next start. You don't need to switch to another mode though - press the mode button and press the already selected mode and it will change the drive to ECO.

On my previous car (Same engine and gearbox but in an Audi).... I did some testing around town and motorways and not 100% certain coasting saved any fuel. Best MPG I got around town was with the gearbox in manual mode and changing up gears earlier. Difference not big enough to use an automated gearbox in manual mode though :)

I like eco mode as a passenger as I sometimes suffer from motion sickness. With eco mode it reduces the effect of surge and lift style driving on motorways.  It's the lift and subsequent engine braking that get me as it makes my head nod forwards. Accelerating isn't so bad as my head is against a head rest.

I like the coasting feature of Eco, but not the drive characteristics. I've tried setting it to Eco in Individual mode, but it's sluggish, even with my Racechip XLR. I want coasting, but in normal drive mode! I don't know if there's a technical reason why coasting isn't a global setting you could apply to any drive mode. Seems like such a good feature, why would you limit it to just one mode? I've always used coasting extensively on my previous cars. Judged right, it does make a significant difference to consumption and brake pad wear, would you believe. I'm not particularly bothered about fuel or brake pad costs, I just like driving that way!

If I choose Eco on my car and leave it there when I turn off the engine it will still register Eco mode when I next come to use the car, even after more than a day or two.   Anyhow can anyone describe exactly how this 'coast function ' works?  Does it simply lessen the effect of normal engine braking when you take your foot off the accelerator pedal.

Mine will stay in ECO mode but the drive mode will be D and not E. So that means it will not coast when you lift off the accelerator.

In a DSG car, when coasting it disengages the gearbox and coast. The engine revs drop to idle.

I dont drive in Eco mode as such but have Eco setting set on the individual settings. All ways starts and drives in Eco so E displayed in from of gear selection and idle coast when not accelerating.

But a few of us with recently purchased cars are seeing it show E for the gear selection when you enable ECO mode (or ECO drive mode in individual) but then when you next start the car it will show D for the gear selector. Same happens with Sport mode - it seems to want to revert to drive on the next start.

Will check, but I think mine remembers the drive mode. It was built in September 17.

So far since my car has been in for repair (from 04/11/2017 and counting....) I've had a Golf (67) that didn't remember and an Audi A4 (17) which does remember. My Superb (67) doesn't remember.

My Audi A3 (so also based on the MQB platform) did remember. My Superb built week 42 (I think) does not remember.

My Superb (MY2017) remembers being in Eco too. I've only got round to setting individual (sport steering and headlights, eco aircon and DCC), but haven't checked it it's remembered.

Ours remembers ECO mode, or Sport mode, etc.... what it does not do is keep the drive mode as set. So in ECO mode it will revert to D for the gearbox. Same for Sport mode goes back to D. All other settings are as they should be.

Note this drive mode setting is DSG only.

Yes rtj your post about the DSG box going into Neutral coasting along in idle when in Eco Mode figures. Still not sure how much fuel this is Eco mode engine coasting business is going to save?  A small amount I guess, particularly if you already drive the car conservatively, read the road ahead and avoid unnecessary  sudden acceleration or braking etc...
