door lock mechanism part number confusion

Featured Replies

Sorry if this is an old one, but I have searched and searched...

(New sign-up as I've lost my old registration - sorry - but a long-time lurker and very grateful to all the technical help which I've got from you guys over the years:))

Got the classic door locking problems rear and front passenger side. Managed to sort the totally deadlocked rear one (eventually!) and got a replacement lock off E Bay easily enough. However, the front one, which is in the playing up stage, seems to have a rare part number and I can't seem to get a replacement new non-OEM lock or even a used one (I'd prefer new). Skoda want about £180 inc VAT :crying: and aren't being stunningly helpful. Independent garage says he can only get genuine SKoda (without even knowing part number).

Got the sticker off the front lock mechanism and it's 3B2837015AM - which agrees with what Skoda said when I gave them the VIN number. All the replacement new ones on E Bay are 3B1837015 - and the few used 'B2' ones have different letters at the end too.

Everything says that it will for my model and year, but I gather that there are or might be differences and I don't want to have to f around getting the door card and bits on and off and on again, especially in this cold, if I get the wrong part. But not keen on £180 either.

Ideas? Help and advice?

Thanks.

If you scroll down the list of 'item 1's on this page for 2004 Fabia you'll see that the third digit of the part number for all the RHD (see notes column) front door lock mechanisms is a 2, not a 1. For passenger door on yours, presumably with remote controlled central locking, 3B2 837 015 AM appears to be the currently recommended part number, as per what you have on there.

I suspect that any you're finding with a 1 as the third digit will only work correctly on LHD cars.

Not sure this helps you massively in finding a good-value correct one, but it may prevent you buying one that's wrong.

Thanks. Think that helps. What now doesn't is that my only local - ish Skoda dealer says there are no such parts in the UK and they are on back order and so can't give me any clue when I might get one  Not great if the lock's either gone or about to...

Oh, and just to add to the confusion, the sticker which was on my lock ends AG. The dealer I phoned a few days ago said it should be AM. The dealer today said AG superseded now BT AH.

AH is listed as non-remote lock. I have full central locking...???!!

And I was told lock should be £180 ish, and now dealer on the 'correct' AH says £54...

Aaagh.

Sounds strange but try a seat dealer Mike (parts manager) at seat Worcester on the ombersley  road helped me out and even though expensive it was around £160. But fitted first time with no issues. He even delivered for that price.

He's mentioned on the site as well and is trusted.

Well, from the helpful links posted above I've identified that at least I had the correct part in to start with, and that I know which I need. (AG became AM, not AH, and I need what is now an AM under the 3B2 prefix.)

It seems as if eveyone selling aftermarket ones on EB are usng the same reference OEM part number and all are quoting the 3B1 reference (i.e. LHD), and effectively therefore no-one is selling a RHD model replacement at all, which I think's strange.

So I phoned one of the many aftermarket suppliers on EB, and he was thoroughly confused as well, although trying to be helpful. I've ordered a part via him on the understanding that I can return it. I can't see that everyone on EB is selling locks for LHD cars and no-one's complaining or sending them back. I bought one from the same company for the rear door and it at least fit and works so far, so fingers crossed, hey?

The Seat dealer idea is good, though Worcester is not exactly my area. I guess that a VW dealer would work too.

Frankly, from the parts dept. service at my nearest Skoda I wouldn't touch 'em with a bargepole! I phoned another reasonably near one today and they said that they had the part in stock in the UK at £181 - so God knows what the chap at the 1st one was really looking up.

Asked the 2nd dealer what they would charge to fit it - £200+ quoted. Yeowch!!! So it's bruised knuckles, frozen fingers and lots of messing and wasting time again, then. And lots of Forum and YouTube research.

I bought lock part of the local scrapers my car is model year 2004
Used part was vw polo 2008
I paid for it 50 euros.
That's what I said just because many parts of the parts fit the mark to another but it only requires a little bit of knowledge about what it is getting.

Hi all. Thanks for the assists and comments.

Good news is that with the aid of your trusty old forum threads we have today managed to replace the front passenger door lock mechanism without too many tears, and it all, digits crossed, is currently working.

I used the after-market cheap part off EBay which was designated "3B1..." , techcnically for the left hand drive model, and the only difference seems to be that it has an additional slot in it, and a little white disc, where it looks like it is designed to accept a key. Usually this would only be on the driver's door (?), so I presume that they are actually designed for the driver's door of a left hand drive car (which makes the 3B1 part number correct). However, the good news is that they do seem to work for a UK left hand side front passenger door (technicially the "3B2..." part number).

Hurrah!.

Can you post a link to the item?

Something like:

Loads come up if you search E Bay (at least did when I was tearing hair out a few days ago) - it's the stated OEM part compatability which is the issue. FOr instance that link (chosen as the first which came up when I E Bay searched) says "Reference OEM number  3B1837015AQ 3B1837015AM 3B1837015BV, 3B1837015BP 5J1837015, Door Motor Lock Solenoid Relay Mechanism" .

They often give a 5 year warranty (many sellers do, if they're still around...), so we'll hope it lasts that long.

I'll stress that this was on a 1.9 estate TDi 04. Can't speak for other models.

The white slot is not for a key but for this flat bit on the end of the barrel...

Fair do's; my poor wording. But the point is that only the driver's side door / handle has a key opening ability; the passenger side does not. Therefore, if the lock mechanism is designed to fit the end of a lock barrel, it must be the driver's side that it is designed for. If the lock mechanism fits the left hand side (passenger in the UK), that suggests that it is indeed a part number for a left hand drive car: which, fortunately, also fits the passenger side of a UK right hand drive car.

Glad you got it sorted Elsie, and that's good info about the available eBay parts. :)

Cheers for the link. I'm having the drivers side apart this weekend coming. The puddle light and alarm indicator work when they want. I've got a new indicator and a good used latch. I'm hoping it's a wiring problem though. Daughter was holding the door card and dropped it after I'd connected the plugs back up. They all pinged off, so multi meter out first, replacement second.

Do not worry though as far as I have understood correctly the model 2012 vw transporter uses the same locks.... I also wondered how the 2008 vw Polo lock work my 2004 model fabia
The only thing I knew when ordering that part was that it was a central locking car.
But after all everything goes ok and it works well
