Hatchback gas struts

The hatchback does not stay open so I assume the gas has escaped and they have to be replaced.

On ebay prices vary from £12 to £50.

Is there a difference between ones with rear wiper and with no rear wiper?

The length is what, 495mm?

Different sellers say different things.

Are all these things made in China now?

Thanks for any comments.

There are different struts for different models. The VRS ones are rated slightly higher because of the spoiler. Not sure if any UK models came without a rear wiper but if they did then they may have less powerful struts.

I replaced mine with Magnetti Marelli ones from eBay but they're not very good. Tailgate is still very heavy to lift open initially and once about half way up if you let go the struts fully extend too quickly.

Has anyone used the SGS ones on a mk1 hatch?

With the SGS struts fitted.

The two pics show the max and min elevation the struts hold the door open.

The old struts would not hold the hatch open.

don't wish to pour cold water but---I replaced two on a Merc,  from these people,    just over 12 months later  the top mount on one actually fell in half (not come off)    and punched a hole thro' the back window
