Something for us cyclists to look forward to, Not.

Featured Replies

Government considering early 2018 as to the necessity, and possibility of making it law for all cyclists to wear high viz and helmets when riding.

Obviously everyone is going to have their own opinion but I personally think it bonkers.

Maybe, just maybe, not too bad an idea for commuters in rush hour traffic, so make it between certain hours and anytime after dark but i would hope they could leave these decisions in our own hands.

Most of us are sensible enough to wear bright colours when necessary and use lighting as well, and for the numpties that aren't then it's their life in their own hands.

yes, it's a free country so long as you do what they tell you, when they tell you.

I might have to start riding side saddle, Lol.

It is a personal choice now and it should remain so provided people respect other users, such as cyclists not riding in black clothes and no lights at night.

Just as in car driving, cyclists can come unstuck if another motorist doesn't follow the rules. I wrote off one cycle helmet when a car cut a tight corner in a residential area, hitting me hard, and my head hit the edge of the curb stone on landing. I had other injuries including broken hand bones but the helmet saved my life. It was my choice to wear one on that ride and I now wear one on every ride. You cannot anticipate what fools will do.

But that is my choice and not a dictate from Government. Make up your own mind what you want to do, but make sure you know the risks.

I read and hear many news stories in the last 2 days and this morning.

Bad journalism in lots of the headlines and media headlines on the telly.

I understand that they were / are to consult and consider in the new year for those 'Riding on the road',  so not 'All Cyclists'.

Public Highway Cyclists.

No problems with a new Law of the road for cyclists if it is going to help save lives even if riders dont care about theirs.

I read a good article in Singletrack World and elsewhere, about the Electric Bikes, Deliveries in towns / cities etc.

I can not believe how badly some cyclists are dressed for being seen when riding.

Even those with a Hi-Viz helmet or hat on cycling, running etc that think that makes them visible to motorists.

I do see much older than me that dress in all dark clothing on bikes and seem to have survived for many decades.

Personally i never ride without a helmet on now.

Or a hi-viz vest, on or off road, but i never did for  50 years, other than a helmet on where the rules said you had to to ride someplace.

E-bikes could be subsidised and helmets compulsory under new government plans _ road.cc.mhtml

Bike safety review could result in compulsory helmets and hi -vis « Singletrack Forum.mhtml

So maybe No Compulsory Helmet wearing for road cyclists.   Time will tell and maybe Jessie Norman MP can be believed, and maybe newspapers can report more accurate stories.

'Fat laddie has not sang yet'.

No plan to make cycle helmets compulsory in safety review – minister _ World news _ The Guardian.mhtml

I still hope a Hi-Viz Vest or jacket is made compulsory on the road.  (Even if just string vests... or tabards.)

& Cars use Dipped Headlights in Poor Visibility and not DRL's.

Well lets hope it's BS anyway, but 'Riding on the road' must apply to all cyclist at some point on their ride, no???

Unless you live literally alongside a cycle track, Lol.

Maybe a think tank looking for ideas on how to keep our PCSO's busy. I don't think they would catch me, Lol.

No.

Until i got an E-Bike i was never riding in towns or on roads just transporting my bike until i got the the parks or tracks / trails / forests / canal tracks.

I stopped riding roads many years back.  & not into riding up hills..

But then every route from public place to public place is a right of way or vehicular Roght of Way in Scotland so is really a Public Road or route open to the Public, Walking , Cycling, Riding, and sometimes driving.

Plenty go to Cycle Parks, BMX / Skate parks, Hill routes without road riding.

Greenroads in England / Wales are Public Highways unless it has restrictions, without getting into arguments over Bridleways etc.
