Felicia, low airflow to the defroster

Featured Replies

Hi.

Do anyone know where to find a diagram, or has any experience with faultfinding of the ventilation system, for a Felicia -99 mpi?

Something seems odd with the flaps inside the heating system, as there is a low airflow to the defroster outlets for the windscreen.

I also found that the "vacuum actuator" on top of the heating system parts in the the engine room was loose, and the rod which goes from the actuator downwards to the heating system seems stuck. This in turn explains why the "vacuum actuator" had some broken clips and was loose.

It seems as a huge challenge to remove the heating system for disassembly and trying to understand what the problem is.

So I'm very keen to get my hands on a manual and to use a kind of laparoscopic surgery, to first understand what have gone wrong and secondly to fix the issue.

Best regards

From your description I see you forgot to tell us the essential. Your car is fitted with A/C. There are many other things missing, as the history of heating system for instance. We can't guess how the fault started because we know only what you tell us and show us. You can use pictures too in your description...

Sorry Ricardo.

The car is a Felicia LX station wagon -99 with A/C.

The ventilation system has been working without problem until now, but a week ago when the first subzero night came i discovered that the defroster was not as rapid as normal. The heat and flow from the other blower outlets is OK, but the flow up to the window is low.

I usually use the vent re circulation (the button with arrows in a circle) to defrost the window a little quicker and until the temp is OK in the car.

When i pushed the re circulation button the sound of the blow normally changes a little, but not now.

So i took a peek under the hood and found that that vacuum actuator located at the red arrow according to below, was hanging loose in the hose.

( this picture is taken from the web of an older Felicia, I may take a picture of it later if necessary)

After a closer look i found the plastic clips on the actuator was broken. I did an attempt to glue the actuator back, but noticed that the rod which goes from the actuator downwards in front and to the right of the ventilation package presumably down to the flaps, was stuck and i can't understand why?

Unfortunately it is not so easy to get access to the ventilation package, and if someone knows where to find a exploded view, diagram or pictures of the inner guts of the ventilation package it would be a lot easier to understand what might have happened and hopefully locate and fix the problem.

I realize that this may be two separated problems, as both the re circulation and the flow up to the windscreen is affected.

But it's hard to test these functions separately, as the rod going down from the actuator is stuck. mom 22.

I hope this description i better...

I have uploaded Klimaanlage FELICIA - Konstruktion und Funktion to learn about the system. Basic understanding of how the system works should give you an idea what is wrong. We'll start from there.

Kudos Ricardo.

I just realized, as the flaps are interlinked, that it might be the fresh air inlet flap that may be stuck, which in turn broke the clips on vacuum actuator.

The inlet flap should be a lot more exposed to aging from the elements, and perhaps more prone to problem, than the re-circulation flap.

But it does not explain the low airflow to the defroster outlets on the window...

Thanks again Ricardo.

The flaps marked with blue are responsible for the air distribution in the cabin. The knob marked with red drives them simultaneously using a cable. Most probably something broke at the end of the cable near the flaps.

Hi.

It was indeed two problems.

1. I started diagnosing the re-circulation.

First i noticed that the flap was half open, then I removed the rod between the upper and lower flap, and checked the pulling and pushing force needed.

When pulling and pushing the upper flap, and looking down into the air inlet, i noticed that the most of the force needed was due to the rubber edges on the left and right sides of the flaps. The rubber has become stiff and with some dirt made it a bit hard to move the flap end to end.

- I sprayed the bushings and rubber on the flaps with some Teflon spray, and gave the flaps a thorough exercise.

- After that i made two holes in the bracket and used two wires to fasten the vacuum actuator.

It worked great when i tested it.

2. Next item was to deal with the defroster.

I removed the instrument panel to get access to the inner parts of the ventilation panel, once there i noticed that one of the arms pushing the wires was loose. Maybe the wire bundle for the the push-button's above the ventilation panel has became entangled in the arm, I do not know.

Anyway, I just pushed the arm back and gave the plastics a good spray with the Teflon spray. It worked well and was a lot easier to turn than before, so everything was fitted again.

The final test was successful, a good blow on the windscreen, the knob for the ventilation was a lot easier to turn and the re-circulation worked!

Thanks Ricardo for your information it has been invaluable!
