The chromed insert on my gear stick that has the gate layout on it rough as hell, the chroming is breaking up.

 

Does the insert pop out on its own, or do you have replace the whole knob?  Either way how to get it or the knob off?

I believe the chrome insert comes off and can be replaced by any number that are available on the bay of E

Yes the chrome bit clips into the top of the gear knob. There are a number of different shapes so make sure you get the correct one. Ordered mine thru main dealer and it didn't cost much.
