Android auto+Waze+Headlights = night mode

Recommended Posts

Hi there,

I run Waze via Android auto as a navigation app.

When I switch the headlights on, it switches Waze into its 'night' colours, I don't really want this to happen when I use the headlights due to poor viz, E.g. heavy rain etc.

I think when I used to use Waze on its own (i.e. on the phone) it used to switch to night mode based on the time of day, anyway to reproduce that behavior when using Android auto?

Ish. I've found it's pretty unreliable, but you can change the developer settings within Android Auto to control the day/night switchover by the phone instead of the car.

With the phone disconnected from the car, open the app.

Press the 'hamburger' menu icon at the top left, and then 'About'.

Tap the text saying 'About Android Auto' 10 times and a notification will pop up at the bottom saying that you have enabled developer mode, then tap the '3 dots' menu item top right.

Then tap 'Developer Settings' (it's transparent here because it started disappearing at I was screenshotting!)

Tap 'Day/Night'

And change it to 'Phone-controlled'

As I said, it's not reliable. Sometimes it works for me, sometimes it doesn't. I wish it did- I find the map fairly hard to read in 'night mode' when it's not pitch black outside, and with low sun or bad weather making up about 90% of the times it's not dark, I basically never turn my lights off in the winter!

doing those steps helped for me on my Wife's Fabia using AA - for both Waze and Google maps, but i set it to "Day" as I don't ever want it to be night on the headunit as I can't see a thing

I tried setting it to 'day' and that works fine.

I was worried it would be a problem when it was actually dark but I've just driven back with it in 'day' mode and I didn't find it too bright or distracting at all.

So, I'm happy with that.

first post so hope its OK

I use a small app that changes the day / night mode according to sunset / sunrise times.

It is on the google play store

https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=gb.aahelper.hr

I have used this successfully to keep my maps in day mode regardless of if I have the lights on during the day

Hi Dorset Bill,

Welcome to Briskoda.

Thanks for the link to the App.

It says that the app will calculate sunrise and sunset at 1.30 AM every day based on your location.

Does it need the phones location on to do this?

I might be a neighbour of yours, well Dorset!

Thanks AG Falco

To get an accurate sunrise and sunset time you need the date, the time ( UTC time ) and location.

Sunrise in Scotland is different from sunrise in Dorset on the same day.

Maybe it uses your last known location?

Thanks AG Falco
