Water temp gauge abnormal reading

Featured Replies

Hi all,

Have a 4 year old 1.6 tdi and today was the first time I've used it in  freezing conditions as I'm not normally in the UK over the winter months.

Started it from cold after standing outside overnight with it covered in snow & ice.  After about 7 or 8 miles  temp gauge reaches normal then keeps moving to about the 2 o'clock position, stays there for about 15 seconds then drops back to normal.  I've never seen this before.

Is it just the water  beginning to circulate around the engine as a valve opens or potential water pump problem?

Should add that heater was blowing out plenty of hot air within a couple miles.

Thank you.

That usually indicates a sticky thermostat issue. However things can be different these days with sensors / multiple circuits- eg I know my 1.4 has two water pumps etc...

Thank you, will see what happens over the next few days.

Very likely to be the water pump - a bit of a known issue on the 2.0 and 1.6 tdi's from 2013-14. My 2.0 displayed the exact same symptoms a few times last week, fixed under extended warranty.

Thank you for that
