Winter tyres.

Featured Replies

Guys i have been offered some winter tyres by my boss. he has a set in the workshop which he used last year but now doesn't need. they are 235/55/18. I currently have 225/40/18 on my Diesel VRS.

I'm pretty sure they wont fit as they are wider but i thought it was worth an ask.

Alternatively, anyone want to buy some winter tyres? :D

235 would be fine, that's only a 5mm difference in width it;s the 55 profile that's the problem, no chance they would fit.

Really? i thought that would have been the least of my worries. shows how much i know!! Thanks for the advice Muzza

55 profile is around 30mm extra diameter? would this be an issue on a non lowered car? after all you can fit 19s on a 40 profile? not much difference? just asking as im curious what the maximum wall size can be for the stock geminis 18s

I put 245/45's on my car for a short while recently (they came with a set of wheels) and my speedo was reading under actual GPS speed, also they looked daft.    55's are two sizes up in profile terms, even if they did fit your speedo would be WAY out and they'd look horrendous.    If they were compatible they'd be listed on the inside of the filler cap & manual, they're not.

Thanks Muzza, exactly the reason i asked here instead of putting them in the boot and driving to a fitting shop. Saved me the embarrassment of looking a total fool!! lol

No worries mate, glad to help.

For more insight have a look here - at 60mph on your speedo you'd actually be doing nearer 70mph, also have a 40odd % increase in sidewall height.

so you would just about get away with 50s?

Depends what you consider getting away with...     possibly, but as said your speedo would be well out (illegal) and your car would look bloody awful lol

You also need to be careful regarding insurance. Manufacturers speciify particular rim/tyre sizes and insurers can be picky should you be responsibile for an accident. Wearing a 55 (or 50) profile on a car and rims designed for 40's will raise a red flag unless declared.

Just doing the Maths, the circumference of both tyres are as follows:-

225/40/R18 = 78.5"

235/55/R18 = 88.5"

That's a MASSIVE 13% difference and would almost certainly be deemed illegal.

For the winters on my VRS I went with 225/45/R17's, and purchased a cheap set 17's alloys. Circumference is 78.4" (almost identical to stock) and my insurer is happy for me to use them (rims and tyres are within spec). The 17's also ride better than 18's, tyres are cheaper for 17's, and I do not need to mess around with fitting and balancing - I just swap the 17"/18" wheels myself when summer/winter comes.
