AirCon noise in cold weather

Featured Replies

Hi, My 2007 Fabia MKII has been a fantastic car with no problems but...

Lately in cold weather the the air conditioning has been making a lot of noise. It is very loud and it does vary in sound when I switch gears and even brake. It works fine but the noise is extremely loud (and primarily on the right side of the car). If I turn the aircon off it the noise stops as well.

Anyone here who can help me in identifying this issue.

Regards,

Bez.

Can you identify what kind of air-con? Some have manual climatic, others have digital, climatronic climate control.  Having said that, you may have leaves or some kind of debris in the fan or filter cabin part of the system. Does the noise happen even if the system is switched of, as in only cool or hot but no chilling effect? I mean if the fan is running but a/c is off. I think in Iceland, you drive on the right, so steering wheel on left so access to the fan and cabin filter will be on the right and this will make noise if blocked or obstructed. You might be worth removing the filter from under the dash and feeling up inside this area for leaves. Make sure the fan is off before shoving your fingers in there, unless you fancy a trip to the emergency room! You could try running the fan without the filter in, to see if anything falls out but not for too long as you may make it go further in to the system and be harder to remove.

Thanks for the Reply. This is manual Climatic control, If the system is off then there is no noise from the AC. Will check for debris in the system.

Holiday stress and prep took first place, am looking to do this later this week.  Will post results.

I have the same problem on my 2010 fabia. Sound comes on in cold weather, doesnt matter if the ac is on or off, goes away after some time (sometimes not) gets louder when breaking or changing gears. Hpoe you guys can find a solution..

Probably just low on gas and needs refilling. Note the turning a/c off doesn't stop the variable displacement compressor but simply turns the output down to low (approx 2% iirc).

Just another question to the OP, when you AC are you really meaning AC or just cabin air heating?  What I am meaning is, as above the compressor remains running at all times but with very low duty or displacement, so I'd expect if it was the chiller section of the HVAC then you would only hear this noise if the cabin fans were running and you were demanding a low temperature that was forcing the compressor to do work, if you then raised the cabin temperature to Hi this noise should reduce or stop.

Sorry if you are meaning that while using the cabin heating/cooling AND having the AC switched on there is noises.

I don't want to answer for OP here, but in my case, it is not depending on wether the ac is on or off. When the noise comes, I have tried to turn all the way to low temp, up to high temp, turned on the recycle air button, change fan mode, but the sound remains the same.
