Panel air filter upgrade

Featured Replies

Probably brought up many times before but as the air filter will need changed I'm goin to upgrade it to a slightly better one I suppose but which one is best K&N, Pipercross or ITG for a vrs Tdi? I've heard good and bad rumours about all relating to MAF issues and failures but had an ITG in an FTO Mivec and it was brilliant but it was cone and petrol so totally different as I'm only changing the panel filter in the original air box.

Or if anyone recommends something different...

Waste of time.  The OEM paper panel filter flows really well and are cheap as chips as a pattern part.  Just change it at half the recommended interval (which is something stupid like 50-60k miles (?) and you'll be fine with no oil contamination issues to worry about.

If you can't help yourself and have to spend the money then you need an oil free filter.

Oh right so the panel filters are just as bad as the cones? Was just looking kinda for something we bitta turbo noise along those lines without purchasing a cone filter or effecting the cars engine and of course avoiding the remap option too as like to keep it genuine thanks for the reply.

Can't beat an ITG kit for turbo whooshy goodness!

Are those new panel kits oil free now? Had seen kits in 2012 that destroyed MAFs ?

Don't mind spending the cash for the best one on the market that causes no damage or dims the performance of the engine...

Just copy it to your SD card and turn up the volume.

Just stick with the paper filter unless you're modifying the car otherwise you're just wasting your money.

Was looking at pipercross and it states it's dry foam does that refer to it not needing oil or is not oil based protecting the air flow meter? Just what it says anyways

No, you still oil them.

To change topic, what are recommended upgrades for a 2008 octavia vRS tdi? Or the best ? And say money not be a problem haha

If you don't want to remap or modify it much then look at suspension as it's coming up to 10 year old and would look at refreshing those areas especially the bushes and springs

Good Servicing and maintenance and maybe some Millers Oil additive in the diesel occasionally.

Yea did put the stuff through the diesel and I service every 5000 miles with good oil was looking at brakes and stuff maybe pads and grooved/drilled discs? Or are they necessary? Will have a look into suspension, what kind of mods are regularly done by people on here in regards to remaps or any kind of mod? What is the most popular mod?

Thanks for the replies lads.

Probably sticking an aftermarket filter in not that it improves anything. Then remaps, uprated rear ARB, bushes, shockers and springs.

Thanks gonna take a look now.

If an aftermarket filter means better flow/performance, take the current one out altogether and take it for a test drive.

Preferably in damp windless conditions with minimal traffic to minimise airborne particulate ingestion.

Unless you feel a noticeable improvement it's not worth pursuing.

I'd just get a remap or a JB4.  Even if a cone or panel filter had an effect, it's 2kw at best.  Get a remap and bask in the glory of an extra 70-100Nm of torque.  I've had a Bluefin for the past 95,000 miles and it's been great.

For all they cost I get my air filter replaced at most at every 2nd oil and filter change along with the pollen filter and if they're on offer I've had the garage change them at every oil change.... I buy the parts and oil and my local garage changes them for me for £20..... Well to be 100% honest I do the pollen filter myself as it's a 5 minute job.

Thanks for replies guys all very helpful advice I'm very tempted to go for the map to save fuel and for the extra boost but I'm just not a fan of the remaps I'm hard to persuade on them unfortunately but as for the filters think I'll just stick with the ordinary system as I've had the car for 10000miles and not a bother and with my uncle before that as well. There just seems to be too much to go wrong with aftermarket filters.

Thanks.

To me sticking a K+N or anything else on a TDI is like putting lipstick on a pig, it looks pretty, but don't do anything!!!!!
