Car insurance(with mods)

Featured Replies

Hi all,

at the moment, i have a plan, shall we say to slightly alter the power output of my car. nothing too over the top.

it will however envolve a different turbo and a few other alterations.

how easy is it to get insurance on a car with this kind of work? i know chris knott insures cars like this but anywhere else? is it funny money?

thanks in advance:)

If its just the exhaust and remap your after being over the magic age of 25 will help you.

Shop around I wouldnt imagine it to be a huge increase tbh.

looking at changing the turbo aswell mate :)

And FMIC?

Age will be a factor - tried to insure the Beast through Chris Knott but they wouldn't insure me with all the mods and me being 29. They said they would at 30 but they may have just been saying that to be polite :)

My options were really restricted to sticking with LV who would only continue to insure me with mods as I took my policy out with them 3 years ago when they insured modded cars (they now don't on new policies).

How old are you Kenny?

ah ok, i thought being over 25 would be enough. i will need to call chris Knott nearer the time, im 26 atm but no point getting my car done and i cant insure the thing :(

the OE twin set up i have just now should be ok ok for just now as im not looking for huge power :)

I am in a similar situation with LV. Have they agreed to any more mods since their change in policy?

Well they have my vehicle on file as 1.8T 'modified' - i did ask if they wanted a breakdown of the modifications when i renewed and they said NO. They said they were not taking on NEW policies with modified vehicles and would however honour the renewing policies (like mine) - they told me when i asked in December that the approach is exactly the same for me as it always was, as long as CC is not increased mods are covered as long as they are documented + photographed.

I'm hoping that as i'm 30 now i'll have some more options as i've always been a little worried about it - maybe unneccessarily?

was it the power output Chris Knott were worried about dave? i was hoping they would insure me :(

It's still worth dropping them a line, insurance companies are weird beasts IMHO - you can do tons of stuff on some insurers but then suddenly they won't let you put on some minor mod, whilst your engine is totally modded (for example).

Some don't do 'chipped' cars, but they do 'remapped', with others it's the other way around. No clue why as the effect tends to be the same: more power :D

(ps about the twin SMICs, oh yeah you guys have two, Furby only has one :( )

:P

Currently with Elephant and just recieved the renewal. Thought I'd try Admiral and low and behold £118 cheaper!! £430 with Elephant and £312 with Admiral. They are the same company FFS, even the questions on the website are the same. Same £160 Excess, lower windscreen excess and a free loan car.

got a good quote online from greenlight but im not sure how accurate it will be when it comes to getting a policy over the phone from them

I'm a little more mature than you guys, but got a cracking deal with the co-op, over the phone not online.

my big issue is finding someone that will happilly insure a car with new big turbo and other mods etc

My parents always used CO-OP, I have tried them and they are preety competitive but weren't very mod friendly.
