Is the 1.9 tdiin the early fabia sports the same as the mk1 vrs engines. Just looking at getting a mk2 and noticed the 1.6tdi and the 1.9tdi have the samw outputs.

Mk1 VRS was 130 catalogue BHP (often much more in reality), believe the sport was 100 catalogue BHP. The 1.9 is a rougher but much torquier engine, but does not suffer DPF problems, and the possible EGR problems if a 1.6 is subject to the emissions fix. 

I like the thought of the 1.9 as I know its not to hard to get to mk1 vrs figures and above. 

The 1.6 does sound better on the low tax and 140bhp after a remap.

As posted the 1.9TDi is far less refined than the 1.6CR TDi. Also any car with the 1.9 will be generally getting long in the tooth but the last 1.9's with emissions control were far simpler than the 1.6CR system. The EGR is a much cheaper part and accessible where as on the 1.6CR a 5-6 hour job as so much has to be dismantled first.

 

I can't comment on the DPF life and replacement costs for either engine. For some DPF's a wash out will buy some time.

The Fabia 1.9tdi does not have a DPF. They were made until 2010.
