Door speakers upgrade?

Featured Replies

Hi I have a 2003 VRS and both front door speakers are blown. It's been like this for a while but now I want to upgrade to something better that should last longer. I've found that it is 6.5" speaker size that I need with MK4 Golf adaptor rings. Has anyone ever upgraded their door speakers and what speakers do you have as I've no clue what to go for. Also would it be better to get MDF rings for better sound quality? I'm not good with electrics and on a budget so don't want an amp and sub, just decent enough replacement speakers. Any advice is much appreciated. Thanks

I replaced mine with bog standard 6.5" JVC speakers. The difference over the originals is like night and day. There's plenty of kits that come with the rings on eBay,  name ya price.  I'm no speaker nerd but for the £37 all in and £5 for speaker connectors it was worth it and so easy to do after the door card is removed.

When I bought the car, I found the speakers to be distorted and rattling, replacing the head unit with an aftermarket Sony one didn't help. Few months later my window regulator shat itself so I replaced it with a whole second hand unit with OEM speaker attached to it which sounded fine until few weeks later it started to become distorted. I took both door cards off the other day to check how the speakers are mounted and found that some of the foam surround has fallen off which I assume is the reason they sound distorted. Hence I would like to replace it with something better quality. After bit or researching I found MK4 Golf adaptors do fit so they are on the order and I've not made my mind up on speakers yet.

After review and consideration I have bought these: Pioneer TS-A1733I Car Speakers

Going to fit them over the weekend

Just had a look at those pioneers and they seem to be coaxial speakers. Not sure if the door card will fit back on as the tweeter in the middle protrudes quite a bit-suppose you can only try and see. Also remember to disconnect the factory tweeter at the top of the door as otherwise you'll have two lots of tweeters per door!

I was thinking that as well, as it has built in tweeters what would be the effect if i left the original tweeters powered as well?  Probably too much top ..  I will disconnect them and see what they sound like on their own.  Hopefully I can fit tomorrow but time will be tight

Would probably be a case of it sounding a bit too tinny with two tweeters. Sensitivity may also be different so one might sound louder than the other.

You can only try and see i guess.

Also don't rush it as only takes a broken clip or something to get in your way and end up taking an extra hour!
