I've found my first slight annoyance in the car... Is there a way to disable the two kinda map reading lights that dimly light the gear stick when you're driving? Really don't need to see my hands of the gear stick at night!

Why are you looking at your hands at all when driving at any time? 

Don’t think so, I haven’t come across anything in the settings yet, maybe VCDS will get you somewhere.

No way to disable as far as I'm aware. Bit of blu tack or similar is a bit less permanent than a Sharpie! I actually quite like them at night but each to their own

I had my first Mk 3 with these for ages before I even realised they were there and then asked a question on this forum about what are they for.

 

I obviously don't get out at night enough - I do like them though.

I think they can be controlled to dim with the foot lighting, but I am not near the car now, so cannot confirm.

Think OP has a pre-facelift VRS and footwell lighting was not an option in UK on these.

OK... They are on my Finnish pre-facelift VRS and I am almost sure they dim along with the footwell lights.

 

If I remember, I check it tomorrow.
