EGR nightmare !!!

Featured Replies

Hello, here's my nightmare story: The car in question is an Octavia 1.6 FSI mk2, 2005, and I had a faulty EGR valve for some time, so I decided it's time to change it (turned up a broken plastic gear inside the EGR valve after opening it, which didn't let the valve to open). I bought a new valve with new gaskets and I fitted myself. I mention that before fitting the new valve, the engine was running perfect, with no problems at all (just it took much longer to warm up due to faulty EGR). After fitting the new valve, nightmare starts - the engine has a very rough idle, the rpm drops around 600-650 rpm (before was around 750). I did the checks in VCDS on EGR, everything seems fine, reset ECU, problem stays. Now the engine light came on and turns 2 errors:

008584 - Bank 1 - System too Rich at Idle

                P2188 - 002 - - MIL ON

                Freeze frame .....etc..

001032 - EGR sensor 2

                 P0408 - 001 - Signal too High - Intermitent

                Freeze frame....etc.

I looked a lot online about these problems and turns up many possible causes : MAF sensor, EGR pipe, improper EGR seal, O2 sensor....etc...

I would rule out the possibility of the new EGR valve to be faulty, as the engine is warming up much faster than before, so the valve it's working.

I don't really understand how these problems showed up now, after changing a new EGR valve, and with the old blocked EGR valve I had no errors (except the EGR), but the engine was running smoothly, not shaky and rough like now.

Also mention that when I replaced the old valve, I found silicone around both ends of the valve, where the EGR gaskets are. I didn't put any silicone on the new one, as I'm under the impression that the metal gaskets should seal enough. Do I really need to put silicone around the gaskets ? Also did a throttle body clean, and no luck.

Anyone has any ideas ? Your answers will be much appreciated.

Is it a genuine EGR?

No, it's aftermarket, but as I said, the new EGR seems to be working fine as the engine is warming up much faster than with the previous EGR which was blocked.
