Started engine in error during oil change.

Featured Replies

Hi guys, just looking for someone with some knowledge to put my mind at ease really !

Changed the oil and filter on my superb today and after putting in approx 3.5 litres (car takes 4.3) I briefly started the car for no more than 10 seconds to circulate the oil then checked the level. Barely a couple of mm showing on the dipstick! Generally I would check the dipstick before the first turnover and as long as it's between the min and max I will do the brief turnover.

I was the dipstick today and had a brain fart.

Should everything be Ok? I filled the oil filter housing with oil too before turning over.

Muchas Gracias x

Relax, it'll be fine.

@Shaunieboy - Sure and it'll be fine. All you did was pump oil into the filter and galleries it had drained out of a little earlier than usual. This is why you should always refill with the recommended quantity, idle the engine for a few seconds, then go for a teabreak (to let anything that's going to drain back). When you come back, then dip the oil and top up if required.

But then as only the 1.2 44Kw engine gets checked cold, you do as the Dip Stick is suited to, and you know the level cold,

You check at operating temperature,

so that will be once the oil has been to above an indicated 50*oC,  Better once it has been to an indicated 80*oC.

Drive it because sitting ticking over is pointless.

(you know you have enough oil in, just not where it should be with 'an operating temperature check'.)

Park on the flat and after a few minutes,  (VW never said, but a few is not 5 minutes or 10 minutes.)

And check at Operating Temperature. (Even if Skoda put 'Warm' in so owners manuals.)

Then you can have the Oil level known before going on a journey, and you would know where that oil is when doing a At Operating Temperature check.
