What did the coolant temperature gauge show?

The oil temp in the maxidot display is engine oil temperature.

My dsg 12 reg took 3.5 hours of stop start driving and idling without turning off ignition to reach an oil temp of 90C in the maxidot display with outside temp of 12C.

Does that mean I could do with a new thermostat? Or do you have to take into account of the coolant temperature as well.

Not too sure if the oil temp is the engine oil or dsg oil...

Hi. Had same problem. Replaced dsg box thermostat that mounted inline after oil cooller on the dsg. Paid 30£ for genuine from tps. Gets up to temp fast now.

Well at that time last weekend coolant was about 35% of maximum. Ie just over half way to middle

Then you definitely have a problem. It should reach and stay at 90 on the coolant temperate gauge after a few miles of driving.

Although not guaranteed to be the simple DSG thermostat, it's the best first port of call, as it's a cheap part and can be done DIY in around 30-40 minutes.

I had exactly the same problem with my Superb when I first bought it. Temp gauge would barely get above 70. It was under warranty at the time, so I got a garage to diagnose it.

After having the car for the best part of a day, they diagnosed "faulty thermostat". As I wasn't paying for the work, I just let them get on with it. They changed the main thermostat... surprise surprise, no difference.

When I went back to them afterwards, it took me going through the part diagrams and highlighting the parts to show them that there is actually another thermostat in the system. Before that I was met with "We've changed the thermostat sir, there isn't another one"

The part on the parts system is described as "Coolant Regulator", so its not a surprise that most garages, even Skoda often have no idea that it exists and how it can affect the system not getting up to temp.

At that point I'd had enough with them, and for the sake of £20 for the part, I changed it myself.

Glad I did, and I'd suggest the same to anyone with the same issues. You only need basic tools to change it.
