Loss of MPG

Featured Replies

Over the last 3-4 tanks I've noticed I'm only getting about 270miles from a tank :(

I have started a new job so my commute is different but the trip computer is actually reading an average of 36 ish on the journey where it used to read about 27

I used to get 300 miles from a full tank easily but have noticed that I'm getting less miles but higher indicated MPG

I dont think I have a fuel leak - I did have a fuel fountain under the bonnet but that was sorted weeks ago.

Any ideas?

Have you got a slow puncture in one of the tyres?

I thought about tyres too, they're all at the correct pressures although the front 2 are basically down to the minimum markers.

Sticking brake calliper possibly - although when my son drove a few miles at speed in his 200SX with the handbrake partially on, the glowing rear right disc and strong burning smell made it easy to spot after the event!

Now, thats a possibility I'd not thought of, though I've not noticed any abnormal "braking" behaviour when not braking (or when braking for that matter).

The strange thing is that the car thinks it is being more economical than it was before, the types of roads I'm driving on and the way I'm driving would make you expect higher MPG too. Assuming the trip calculates its figures from how hard the engine is working, wouldnt a mechanical "brake" such as tyres etc. result in a lower trip figure?

When I bought my Octavia, the fuel guage was dropping very fast, and was telling me I was getting about 200 miles to 3/4 of a tank.

I took it in and they fiddled with the fuel sensor in the tank, and since then it has been behaving, and the guage has been saying about 100 miles per 1/4 (1.8T estate, no mods).

I'd say the first thing to do is fill up and manually work out what mpg you are actually getting, then compare that to the mpg that the DIS is reporting.

If the tank sensor is playing up, then your mpg could look ok, but the guage is reading too low.

I imagine that what they did on mine was somehow recalibrate the tank sensor. When I had the problem, I noticed that even after filling up, the needle wasn't quite pointing to the full mark - it was a tiny bit under.

If you think this might be the problem, you could call the dealer I used and ask them about it - it's Garland Motors in Aldershot - 01252 311818

Mine has always indicated slightly under when it is "full".

Good thinking - I'll work out the actual MPG.
