Cost of service, does this sound right?

Featured Replies

Been quoted £195 for a service consisting of oil, air, pollen and fuel filter change, and oil. Seems a bit pricey to me but I haven't had a car serviced in a while. My car is a 1.9TDi 105

Edited by Matt.

Offered by whom?

It is less than Skoda National Pricing at Participating Dealers for a Major Service, £269.....

where maybe no Air or Pollen Filter might get fitted.

Fuel Filter probably not either.

Why not change those things yourself.

Buy a Oil Extractor and suck the oil out the dipstick Tube, change the Sump Plug and Oil Filter.

Oil pump £35,  then you have one for the next time.

Sump Plug £2

Oil & Filter £30 max.

Air Filter & Pollen Filter £30.

Fuel Filter,  do not know the price ??   Can you change one?, if you can do then.

But then nobody is doing the look see, reporting, checking and road testing etc,  but is that being done for £195.?

You want your steering, brakes, suspension inside walls of tyres checked unless you are doing it.

There will likely be many on here who do it themselves for about £50 - £60.

My runabout costs me £50 with items bought from Euro Car Parts.

I suspect my local independent would charge about £100.

Good luck

You are basically paying for peace of mind. The dealership will change those parts and bearing in mind, the filters will come to around £100 of that cost, the oil another £40 at dealer prices, along with inspecting and lubricating hinges all over the car, checking locks, seat sliding mechanisms, brake wear, tyre wear, doing a basic diagnostic to check for fault codes, bulb, wiper, screen wash checks along with handbrake check/adjust etc and possibly even giving the car a wash. You will then get the all important dealer stamp in the service schedule, adding value to your resale, eventually. Not sounding quite so bad, now is it?

This is unless you have been quoted just the "Basic" Things you listed. Still, worth the dosh unless you can do it yourself.

You forget the most important bit, the air freshener carefully hung on the mirror. :flower:

Filters £100....you're having a larf....

My last service cost for filters which were either Bosch or Mann for 1.2 HTP

Oil filter £5.66

Air filter ££5.41

Cabin filter £11.55

Fuel Filter £9.89

Total =£32.51

A full set of Skoda branded filters supplied by dealers during service will be expensive, around £60-£70 max I reckon. Oil is eyewateringly expensive at dealers.:o

It looks as if the OP is having a "major" service which Skoda fixed pricing lists at £279 so I suppose he's been given a good price (for a dealer).

Invoice prices OEM.

Oil filter £9

Air Filter £16

Pollen Filter £16

Fuel Filtrer £9-£24    so at the high costs, £65 plus VAT £79.

As to that Major services ' Fixed Prices' @ participating dealerships,  no guarantee you are getting an Air Filter, Fuel Filter or even Spark Plugs changed,

so ask for Menu Servicing, what your car needs,

Oil / Filter, Air Filter if Required, Spark Plug if Required, and tell them 'keep their Free Wash and Vacuum'  as it is too expensive for being 'FREE';

Well, I got my car back at lunch time today, was done at the garage my ex partner works for as we still get on and I get to use her car while she takes mine for the work. I have ahd enough of messing around with cars and find it easier to pay someone else to do it. Turns out I also need 2 front tyres (selling my standard wheels for a set of 17's so didn't have these changed), Rear wheel cylinder as mine was seized, and my ns arb link was completely missing (I did hear a bang and a rattle in the arch the other day but ignored it). so the total bill was £248.58 inc vat. At least my handbrake feels a lot better now lol

Good price

Well done Matt.

Puts the £195 quote for a simple service into perspective doesn’t it?

It does indeed and I’m happier knowing that it’s alright again. Will cost me a few quid over the next couple of months but the car deserves it, for its age and mileage it’s in bloody good condition. The only thing that lets it down is the tailgate as it’s bubbling above the numberplate.

Oil filter, £10.16

air filter,  £19.98

pollen filter, £24.36

fuel filter, £37.44

Total, £91.91

So ABOUT  £100. Of course, this is dependant on specific models. These prices were based on a 1.9 Fabia 05 to 11. Just a guide from Skoda's price list. You may find you halve that, depending on models etc and if buying from other outlets. I was merely guesstimating but it WAS a realistic guess so no- I was not having a larf!

Also got to factor in the price of the pd specific oil, although I’m lead to believe Vauxhall oil has the same spec and is much cheaper? The labour for all the work was £90 so I don’t think it’s that bad after all. It’s on 136k now and it looks very good for its mileage so worth spending a few quid on as I’ve got no plans of getting rid.

We're getting Inspection Service done at Ingrams Skoda in Ayr this Saturday for £189, which I think is considerably less than the Skoda national pricing RRP of £269. At this moment I'm unsure of exactly what will be done, and will report back. Ours is mk2 vRS.

I do recall a conversation, actually 2, with the erstwhile service manager of our nearest Skoda dealer. During one conversation, at bill payment time, he put it to me that "he didn't know who I knew to get the service at that price", and was shocked when I told him I simply booked it via his own website system for service bookings. The other conversation, perhaps more relevant to what you get done in servicing, was when he realised I was to pay £189 for a major service. I asked if I would get new spark plugs included in the service to be met with a frosty look and "not at that bleeding price you're paying". So I contacted Skoda UK who had previously paid for the replacement engine, and they told him there and then to fit the plugs.

I do hope our visit to Ingrams is much more customer friendly, they certainly were on the phone when booking it in. Our local fella has been servicing for the last couple of years but is unable to do software updates hence the booking into main dealer.

?

Is it a 'Major Service' Ingram is doing though, an INSPECTION SERVICE is what a 'Minor Service' was called.

They are not going to replace the Air Filter, Fuel Filter or Spark Plugs for £189 are they?

A VW Dealership might charge £299 for a 'Major' Service with Filters and Spark Plugs changed.

Some Skoda Dealerships will charge the £279 and there will be no Spark Plugs changed, they will say according

to the Service Schedule, and at 40,000 miles, and that means spark plugs going unchecked or unchanged which is risky with a Twin Charger.

As to the Park of Hamilton 'Servicing' Gold, Platinum or what ever,  (They who might claim thew spark plugs are good for 70,000 miles)

there are members that posted recently that had Diesels serviced and went for the top service because it looked like a bargain only to discover as

other than Oil & Filter nothing more than a Minor Service was done.

Exactly why I'm unclear George, because the minor service equivalent being offered by dealers is still much less than £189 even. There is another service on their system for £149. The one at £189 as quoted appears to offer filter changes etc hence why I'll report back with what they actually do, according to what they told me air filter, oil and filter would be changed along with any software updates that may have been missed.

I booked the manufacturers service when using Parks, via the booking system on Parks website. I never took out their own servicing plans, Platinum, Gold or Silver as it was mainly a way of getting your car in with them for future MOT as far as I could tell, and once there they would likely have turned you over and roasted your pockets. The lack of product knowledge held by that particular service manager was frightening, as was his readiness to freely impart with that lack of knowledge. The Gopher.

Told me spark plugs good for 60k. And a litre of oil every 700 miles was fine as these cars used oil, it was normal. I've ended up with Ingrams partly through recommendation and partly through not being able to get to closer dealer until much later in terms of being able to get booked in.

Interim service shows as £149 and seems to include some filters, major service is now £279. So I can't fathom what will be done for £189. There's no way I'm paying 40 bangers over the odds for the interim service.

Strangely, when you attempt to book online for the major service, despite what it says on the link above, the price quoted is £189. Once clarified I'll come back.

What is not called an Interim Service was called an Inspection / Minor service when the cars were on Fixed Servicing.

That was on the Twincharger, Minor, Major services time about every 9,400 miles (10,000 miles)

The Pollen Filter Filter was changed at 2 years or was supposed to be,

the Air Filter @ 4 years / 40,000 miles, the Spark Plugs @ 40,000 / 4 years,  Brake Fluid at a Minor @ 3 years but extra cost.

All too odd, Spark Plugs seldom being good for 40,000 miles and needing checked or replaced sooner.

As with the Air Filter, some said leave 60,000 miles, it takes 5 minutes to check.

The Fuel Filter was a For Life fit,  some Dealerships replaced at 40,000 / 4 years because of the experience of issues.

You need 'Menu servicing'.

The Diagnostics done, ant Software Update carried out,

the road test carried out, the Oil & Filter & Sump plug, the Spark Plugs changed if due, the Air Filter checked if you do not do it, as with the Pollen Filter.

the Fuel Filter changed if never done.

Then the inspection and health report.

So basically a Major Service if you leave everything to the Dealership.
