Colombus freezing

Featured Replies

Has anyone else had issues with the Colombus unit freezing on startup? I say freezing, but it actually works in that sound is coming out, the map is moving, but there is no response from the touch screen, side buttons or steering buttons.

I've only had it happen a handful of times in three months of ownership and whilst I can't definitely say it's due to the weather, it does seem to happen on cold days. A simple hold-down of the power button resets the unit and it works okay.

Has anyone had this issue and got to the bottom of it or fixed it?

Not had any issue with mine. What version of the firmware are you running? A firmware update may improve it's performance. 2014 should have MIB1 of which the latest version publicly available is 0411.

Have just been to look at the version info. 'Software' is showing as 0360, does that sound right?

Where do I find the firmware updates? I managed to find and update to the ECE 2018 maps from the Skoda portal, but there's no mention of firmware.

I updated the maps and firmware on the RNS510 on my Golf previously, that took a lot of time and effort Googling, downloading and updating! Worked a charm though

I just found the relevant post about updating firmware (once I'd spelled Columbus correctly).

I assume it's just a case of reading through this. Sounds very familiar to when I updated the RNS510

That IS for updating RNS, not MIB units as fitted to the MK3. You need this topic:

Last page has a new link as the original expired, and also details of the coding change that needs to be done to remove an error when the car is scanned for fault codes.

Cheers mate. I'm getting there, slowly. I'll work through that thread.

So for future reference, 'Columbus' usually refers to the old RNS model and 'Columbus MIB' is the new style?

The term Columbus is ambiguous in that both the RNS 510 in the MK2/2FL and MIB variants (MIB1, MIB2 and MIB3) all have "Columbus" units but the RNS Vs MIB are completely different generations.

I'm not sure the Columbus freezing is due to firmware, although attempting to update it is worth a try as it doesnt cost anything.

There were some issues with faulty touchscreens on MIB1 units early on & I think the solution for most was a replacement touchscreen Under warrenty.

If your car is just out of warrenty it might still be Worth discussing it with a dealer & if it is a confirmed hardware issue, asking Skoda if they will contribute something towards the cost.

@ahenners Yeah I noticed the differences after a quick Google image search. I managed to update the firmware just. Luckily, it was super quick (10 minutes I reckon) as it's freezing out there tonight! I haven't noticed too many differences yet, but I like to keep these things up to date anyway, so good to do.

@Gabbo Good to know about the touchscreen, thanks. I'm not sure it is directly to do with that though, as the buttons also stop working. It is strange because the unit seems to be working when you jump in and then you go to change source or change station and it doesn't respond even though there's sound.

I'm out of warranty too, so that's not an option. I'll see how it goes with the firmware update and if it changes anything. Luckily, the reset fixes it.

Funnily my MIB1 Columbus did this, this morning (i'm sure its done it before but not often enough to worry about) and i had to hold down power button to get it working again (buttons also). I haven't checked but pretty sure i have 0409 SW and It seemed to do it when the phone connected to the bluetooth - works just updated my phone from iPhone 6 to iPhone 7, didn't know if this may make any difference.

The wifes MIB1 Amundsen in the scout is a nightmare for the whole touch screen issue - changes radio stations etc randomly, particularly if the car/screen is cold.

Mine doesn't happen too often and not often enough to be really annoying, yet...

There could be a link to connecting to the phone. The first time it happened it was cold and I had connected my phone through the cable. It automatically started playing music, which was fine. Other times it happens and the radio is on, it defaults to Smooth FM for some reason. Whilst it's not the worst station in the world, it does encourage me to reset sooner!

On that note, does anyone know how to stop the source changing automatically when I plug my phone in through the cable? Not a massive issue, but it's a bit annoying.

Not that i know of, if its just for charging maybe use a USB charger in the cig lighter?

The only way I found was to configure by USB option in Android to be charging only instead of "file Transfer" or "Photo transfer" etc.

I don't think theres a way to stop the Columbus from selecting music files if it finds them.

The alternative is to use an external charger for USB as suggested by ExeterJ

If I remember right, the touchscreen & buttons (basically the entire front of the unit) are one piece & this is what was replaced...

Thanks all. The USB charging issue is very much a first-world problem, so I'm sure I'll cope with either solution :)

The freezing issue, I'll see how it goes over the next few weeks and see if I can pinpoint when it does it.

Otherwise, pretty happy with the Columbus and the size of the screen. Not sure I'd have paid for it myself, but that's the benefit of second hand buying ;)
