Obviously some people have had problems, can only say that once I had done it the first time the latest update went without a hitch using an Apple iMac. I know what the other posters mean by "extraneous files" but the latest OS (High Sierra) doesn't seem to suffer from those problems - or if it does they are transparent to the user!
