Update Navigation Maps

Featured Replies

With apologies as I'm sure this must have been asked before but I can't find anything.

I have been trying to update my navigation maps (Amundsen) but thought it wise not to touch the original SD card just in case so I got a new one. Not an official Skoda one as the first thing it tells you to do is format the card so after that it would have no connection to Skoda anyway.

I downloaded the zipped data, following the instructions, and unpacked it on the SD card.

At the end of this I get the message that it has been successful and I can take the card out of the computer and put it in the car where it will be read by the navigation system.

I have been though this process twice now but when I put it in the car it says, "not valid navigation data".

Any ideas?

  • So anything I sell on Ebay, sometimes on behalf of a group I'm involved in, is stolen? That comment is inaccurate, obvously incorrect, and frankly quite insulting.

Correct, the system will only work with the original card.

There is a full description on how to do it properly in the Yeti Guides section of this forum.

Thanks.

I read the guide but I couldn't see how the car would know it is not an original Skoda card when it tells you to format it.

It's coded. Otherwise there would be people out there making copies and selling on eBay or other sales points.
Make a backup of the card before it formats and unpacks the new data onto the old card.

How does the code survive the formatting?

I thought of the back-up but was too suspicious of it not working and being left with nothing.

Maybe before the next service!

I updated to ECE 2018 for the first time recently without problems (so far) although I was expecting some update message when I reinserted the SD card in the SatNav.

Bit stressful I must admit though.

I've seen the price of a Skoda SD card, around  £35.

I wouldn't pay that on principle so I will have to do it on the original.

Maybe.

If you use an iPhone, and your Yeti will accept Apple CarPlay, try using Apple Maps.  There was a big update in iOS 11 and it puts a lot of Sat Navs to shame.  Works for me!

Actually, after all this, I don't often use the car satnav as I much prefer google and several others on my android phone even with the smaller screen.

Mind, as an aside, I still don't understand how the car knows my phone is in the car and updates contacts etc. even when the Bluetooth on the phone is switched off.

Once you have done the update once it is not scary! Basically you simply drag the Maps to a back-up folder, reformat the card then drag the maps you downloaded from Skoda onto the card - takes a while to load - and all is done. I have done it twice now - first update June 2017 was a bit hairy and second update in November 2017 went without a hitch. Basically you can't really screw much up because the Skoda "secure" code is embedded in the SD card and you can't upset it by loading anything wrong.

That's good to hear, thanks.

I saw the download for radio banners but all dab stations on mine show banners so must be downloaded from the station.

How do we know when an update is released? Dont seem to get any notification from Skoda yet they know they have sold me a car with satnav.

I did update mine in June when I collected it, but havent since.

I hve come across missing new road at a major junction, many places where the speed limit is wrong, postcodes which arent in the unit, etc. so not very up to date.

I saw it on the map download page.

Last one November 2017 and next one June 2018.

Sadly, I think you will find that Skoda's maps are never 100% accurate. I don't know where Skoda get there updates from but I have found a few junctions where the updated maps are clearly out of date. Waze & Google maps are generally more accurate as are those from Tom Tom and Garmin.

Skoda will just buy their mapping info from one of the suppliers. They certainly don't do it themselves.

£35 for a new map is cheap!  Do it yourself is free.  Some car manufacturers charge hundreds.  Mercedes comes to mind.

But rather expensive for an SD card.
